Deleted Linux partition. Need win disc and help!

Well I made a 5gb partition on my hard drive for linux recently. Today I realized it was useless, and I wanted to delete it. So being new to this stuff I thought it would be alright to just delete the partition and reformat it. I restart my computer and the grub loading message still comes up but gives me an error. This is what it says: GRUB Loading stage1.5. GRUB loading, please wait... Error 17 Any way to fix this? I think I can still boot into some live cd's for linux if necessary. Also, I am running windows xp with SP2 and had Freespire Linux. It won't let me boot into windows or linux and all I can do is get into my bios or boot off a live cd. I think I should add I don't have a windows disc. Dell never sent one with my computer... So I've been reading and learned that to fix this I need the windows disc and reinstall a file. So this leads me to two questions I have: 1. How can I get Dell to send me my Windows discs? I remember my friend got his and his computer is older then mine. Also my computer's warranty is up. 2. Could I use another windows disc? I'm not going to actually be installing windows fully so it should be alright, shouldn't it? Thanks for reading!

Yes, borrow a disc.

You can call Dell and request the CD's you need as long as you are the original owner, have the service tag number, and the system is not too old. They will send them at no cost. Tell them you never received them with the order.

The problem is that GRUB is residing on your hard drive as the boot loader in the MBR ( master boot record ) that is what you need to restore (MBR). You can do this with a Windows 98 Floppy boot disk with Fdisk on it. Boot from the floppy disk. At the A:\>> Prompt type " fdisk /mbr " ( note the space between the k and / ) without the quotes and press enter. This will restore the MBR and Windows will not boot once again.

Using the Windows XP CD to boot from is different but accomplishes the same thing:

Boot with the XP installation CD. When prompted, press  " R " to repair a Windows XP installation. If repairing a host with multiple operating systems, select the appropriate one (XP) from the menu. If you have only one operating system, enter 1 to select it. Enter the administrator password if prompted. To fix the MBR, use the following command:  " fixmbr " without the quotes and press enter.
