Dell Update says "Windows 11 is not supported on this device", but Windows 11 is running

Inspiron 15 3567

Inspiron 15 3567

Hello,

this inconsistency "The Microsoft requirements for Windows 11 are not supported on this device."  on Support for Inspiron 15 3567 | Drivers & Downloads | Dell US

and having Windows 11 running for a year on my Inspiron 15 3567 prevents me from installing updates to drivers (I always get "download error").

Current W11 version installed today: Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Insider Preview (10.0.22622.598) (KB5017390)

The problem appeared a couple of weeks ago.

What can I do?

To close this item, there seems to me to be 2 unconnected issues:

1. A problem with Dell Support Assist which I could resolve by uninstalling all related programs. Then a fresh installation allowed me to download and install 2 Dell drivers. (I had problems with Dell Support Assist in the past. There were a number of glitches.)

2. Dell Product Support has started telling me 'The Microsoft requirements for Windows 11 are not supported on this device. ' But when I query MS about it, I am told 'W 11 installed' implying to me "All clear".

(I still would appreciate if somebody told me how to remove personal data from a post...)

As far as Dell supported drivers, there is nothing you can do. Dell will not be supplying Windows 11 drivers now or in the future. Remember that even though Windows 11 runs fine on your system, according to the MS system requirements you have unsupported hardware. And MS has stated that somewhere down the line they will not provide updates for unsupported systems. They may even decide to prevent your system from running Windows 11 at all forcing you back to Windows 10. That is the MS position and Dell, as many manufacturers have decided, will not provide drivers for unsupported systems. The only alternative you have is to source drivers on the Internet from Intel and others.

A couple of things, first, your link shows some info that is not for public consumption.

And next, do you have any particular devices you are having problems with?  Have you checked Windows 11 to see if any drivers are being offered that way?

The last Win 11 Security update does appear to be stirring things up but so far, my unqualified system is fine.  It may not have the best drivers, but I still can use Win 10 drivers.

If you have that update, then you are in the Insider Beta program?  My system is not with the Insider program and does not yet have that update.

Thanks, Saltgrass, for your insights! (How, by the way, do I remove personal data from my posting?)

Yes, I have been in the Insider program ever since W11 came out - and it is more fun than annoyance:)

As I mentioned to JOcean, since I removed all Dell Support programs, I could download and install 2 drivers from Dell. Though the message from Dell "The Microsoft requirements for Windows 11 are not supported on this device." still persists.:)

Thanks, JOcean, for your quick response!

MS never analysed my laptop as not ready for W11 - it was Dell analytics to say so. When W11 came out, I was told by MS that the laptop was ready for W11. It's a problem of Dell Support Assist.

In the meantime, I uninstalled all Dell Assist programs (some 6 or so) and I could download and install 2 drivers.

Best regards

I forgot to say Windows Update has not offered me any Optional Updates to which drivers belong

Many systems are being run that are not recognized as acceptable in Win 11.  The 22H2, which was released on Sept 20, may cause other problems.

I just realized today that Microsoft does give instructions on how to adjust your registry to allow for older processors.  But still the driver situation could be a roadblock for you, depending on your system.

Since you are running the Insider Beta build, it may even be different for you.

Thanks, Saltgrass!

The core of the matter is the following Dell Support conclusion:
'The Microsoft requirements for Windows 11 are not supported on this device. '
I am taking this conclusion with a grain of salt:
1. it's made by a program that needs to deal with millions of configurations; maybe it slipped in this my case:)
2. how can Dell speak for MS in this way? My querying MS results in no issue. I am running now Windows 11 Insider Preview 10.0.22622.601 (ni_release). (I've been running W11 22H2 since March this year without any (visible:) problems.)

This leads me to more relevant points – JOcean touches on them in his/her contribution above:

Which company takes responsibility for which driver updates?
Do they agree on who does what?
Do they only cover those apps and devices they provided for the laptop I bought?
Who takes care of drivers of devices I attached? Is this my responsibility?

I am currently updating my Inspiron 7567.  I tried the normal way and it gave me a your processor is not supported type message.

So, I made the registry change Microsoft explains for bypassing the CPU requirement.  The install seems to be working normally using the downloaded media.

I am using some Wi 10 drivers and some Microsoft drivers to keep my devices working.  So far, things are still working.  I do expect Dell to keep the Win 10 drivers for my devices up to date, so I will continue to try using those.

My system is clean and if it were to completely fail with Win 11, it would not bother me.  I am not putting my unqualified Win 10 systems, which I use on a regular basis, into Win 11.
