Dell Update suggests "SupportAssist Update plugin" as new update

Hi - Finally made an account here to vent my issues with my XPS13.
My machine: dell XPS 13 9350

I have "Dell Update" installed and today it suggested me 1 new update: "SupportAssist Update plugin".
Even tho I can't recall having installed "SupportAssist" in the first place.

Can someone please elaborate:
- What this "SupportAssist" does? Is it sending data to Dell?
- Specifically, what is this "Support UPDATE PLUGIN" and why am I even receiving it?
- Can I delete "SupportAssist" and if so : HOW?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Lijo,

I also got this update notification for my XPS 15 today. Thank you for the link for the SupportAssist information - I now understand what the product is.

But some of the OP's questions still remain unanswered:

1. Is it sending data to Dell?

2. Can I delete it?

I do not have SupportAssist installed currently, so I am assuming Dell is pushing this out as a new program (or it is a part of "Dell Customer Connect").

I would like to add a third important question:

3. Does this program allow any sort of remote access to Dell?

Personally, I need this machine to be very secure, so I would like to opt-out of installing this. So if you could please let us know how that would be great.

Cheers, Rich

Hey Rich,

To answer your questions:

>> The tool is efficient in detecting any issues with the system. It also helps you update any driver if the system has an outdated driver. It also has a feature to run the customized diagnostics to check if there is any issues with any of the hardware component. The tool can be defined as a self-help tool that maintains your computer proactively.

>> Yes, you can remove the software from the system

>> The program does not allow any kind of remote access to us.

Thank you for the already provided info.

I STILL don't get one thing tho: I didn't have the "SupportAssist" tool installed but I did get an update for it from the Dell Update software.

How can I uninstall the SupportAssist update without it popping up again in the Dell Update tool or is this impossible?

Thanks.

Please type support assist on the search options and see if support assist is already installed in the system.

This is my current state: I have the supportAssist Update plugin installed but I don't have the "supportAssist" or "support assist" application on my laptop:

Also, today I get ANOTHER update for SupportAssist :OS Recovery Tools.
Why does Dell Update keep pushing me these updates? Is it a bug or is this the desired behavior?

Hi,

Dell recommends you to enable the Support assist feature on the system as this would keep the system updated with latest drivers update available for your Dell system.

Hi,

I have a Dell XPS 15, and I keep on getting little pop up boxed each time I log in from  Dell Update saying that an update to SupportAssistOS Recovery Tools is available. I cick on install now and it says it has updated it, but I get the same message again each time I log in. How can I stop this from happening? Is it possible to delete Support Assist then download it again from somewhere to stop this?

Thanks for the help. Loving my XPS.

Please type Support Assist onto {Cortana] search box, click on Settings and then disable OS recovery Tool notification.

I am receiving the same notifications for SUPPORTASSIST OS RECOVERY updates on my Inspiron 15-7569 laptop.   I perform the update but the notification to update keeps coming back within about a day.

I got onto SupportAssist, settings, but there is NO option for specifically disabling only OS Recovery Tool notifications.  There is an option for disabling all software notifications, but that isn't what I want to do.  I just want the notifications about updating SUPPORTASSIST OS RECOVERY to stop.

Something up here.....but not sure what.  Would uninstalling and reinstalling SUPPORTASSIST resolve this?

Same symptoms here on XPS 15 9550, in this case, seems to be "Intel(R) Management Engine Components" failing to install (hence retrying)

Tried installing the driver manually, which reported an old version already exists, but couldn't find old version in the "add / remove" programs (as instructed by the driver)
