i have tried what u said but the message i get on screen is "windows cannot open this file, windows needs to know what program created it.windows can go online to look it up automatically, or u can manually select from a list of programs"i have no problem sending attachments to other XP users as they can open them but i think the problem is opening attachments from older versions of windows.i cannot follow the above windows instructions as it is unclear and there are to many options. either that or i am a bit thick and computer illiterate
You must be receiving attachments with file extensions that XP does not use.
Have a look at these file extensions. People will have to send you attachments in a form that XP can read or you will not be able to open them.
To clarify, I suspect that the files being sent to you are created in software that you don't have installed on your computer. Nothing to do with Windows, it has to do with the software needed to display/edit the files being sent.
i think u are right. i have been sent documents in XL and WORD .,as i have a standard windows XP home addition these programs are not installed in my computer.i didnt realise this till today and i have done alot of ringing to know the facts.thanks for replying to my problem. one last question.with no special software on my computer. how can i ensure that recipients of my email can open my attachments.people with older versions of windows cannot open my attachments

Hi,
If you are using Outlook Express try this
Open OE / Tools / Options / Security
Remove the check from "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened"
