hmmm, i checked compatability on all my major programs and deleted noncompatable ones before the move,  I may have overlooked minor programs. but PCmover doesn't let you pick and chose. Just grabs the contents of your hard drive and brings it over. I guess I could restart and copy all my important files to USB flash, but my old 98 computer doesn't like the bigger USB drives that would make it easier.
Can you think of any way to figure out which old program is generating this error? i don't have anything fancy, just works, office, quicken, and a bazillion pictures and mp3s. I'll have to check which version of office I dragged over.
Thanks for your input. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Depends on what files you have transferred from old to new PC OS?

If I recall, Detto IntelliMover provide a supported applications list for WXP transfer.

Subject to versions, most MS applications/files can be transferred, e.g. MS Office 2000 but others e.g. pre 1999 Money isn’t supported by WXP.

Transfer of personal data files e.g. Word, Excel, PhotoDraw, OE files, IE Favorites etc. or Pictures are the norm.

But transferring applications/files associated with software programs &/or hardware devices, can be risky unless first confirmed compatible with WXP.

Wouldn’t just rely on the Windows XP compatibility verification tool preventing transfer of conflicting files.?

I managed to transfer a version of McAfee that kept deleting all my e-mail folders, had to uninstall.

Bought a Detto IntelliMover but ended up using a USB 2.0 flash drive, it was simpler & quicker to use, & can be used for future personal data transfers or additional storage.

The system you are using is prone to causing errors for the reason you mention, lack of choice, not knowing exactly what files are being transferred along the way?

Again if I recall correctly it also requires that correct conventions & settings have been used on the old PC for My Documents type locations & associated Identities/accounts.

There are numerous methods that can be used to transfer files from old to new PC, there used to be a very good DELL link explaining various methods, but Dell keep changing/updating their hyperlinks.

Method used will depend on limits of old PC & method know-how or confidence of user.

Never used it but there is the MS (Files & Settings) Transfer Wizard

Other popular transfer methods (using drag & drop or copy & paste) include but not limited to:

Connecting (temporary) old PC hard drive to new PC

Networking both PCs or burning CDs

Connect PCs via firewire (IEEE 1394) connection ports

Using USB 2.0 flash drive (512MB or higher capacity), old PC requires USB port (likely USB 1.1, slower but OK)

Use USB 2.0 cabled external media devices e.g. ZIP drives, hard drives etc.

As already mentioned, in the absence of being able to network PCs, I’ve found the USB 2.0 flash drive method both cost effective & flexible (you are more in control).

Finally, it’s always better if transferring software programs (e.g. MS Office) that you do so by using original software installation CDs, & B4 transferring personal files Word, Excel, OE folders etc you should always have an AV application installed on new PC.
