Error on shut down- Sync Services.exe Application Error
PC: XPS210 4G RAM SP3
Installed Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini external drive & program. Google found this:The process SyncServices or Sync Windows Services belongs to Maxtor Manager by Seagate Technology LLC.Never used an external hard connected to USB ports, I didn't know about using the "Safely Remove Hardware" & simply unplugged the drive. Get this error when shutting down my pc.
"The instruction at 0X0012e614 referenced memory at 0x00001310 The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program or click on cancel to debug the program. Upper left of the error message says," Sync Services.exe Appliccation error.

"OneTouch drivers will normally remain on the system after uninstallation in case you want to reconnect the device. This is normal for most Windows drivers.
Use Add/Remove Programs to remove Maxblast. No folders or settings will be left behind. Retrospect Use Add/Remove Programs to remove Retrospect, all/any versions. Maxtor Quickstart"
What would chkdsk do? If uninstall/reinstall will that error be gone or not? Will uninstall undo whatever has occurred to cause the error?

Try uninstalling/reinstalling the Maxtor software.
If you don't use the "safely remove" feature, it's possible a file wasn't completely written to the external drive before you unplugged and now you have a file error on that drive. Plug it in and run chkdsk.
Start>run
type in: chkdsk d: /f
Click OK
NOTE: d: is the drive letter for your USB drive; your drive letter may be different!
To avoid the need to use "safely remove" you can do this:
Plug in USB drive
Open Device Manager
Expand list under Disk Drives
Double-click USB drive
Click Policies tab
Click the button to: Optimize for quick removal
Click OK back to desktop
This disables "write caching" on the external drive. So when you close/save a file, it writes all the data immediately to the the drive. And you can just unplug it, long as it isn't reading/writing that drive.
Otherwise, the system stores data in a cache and only writes it to the USB drive when the PC isn't busy. There'll be a slight decrease in drive performance if you disable write caching, but you'll probably never notice.
Disabling write caching on the external drive does not disable it on any other USB device. So if you use a USB memory stick, you'll still need to use "safely remove" or separately disable write caching on that device.

Hi, I had a thread about safely removing, etc. a long time ago. And have been meaning to follow up on it. What I've figured out is....
On my E520 when I use safely remove for my flash drives and memory cards I thought my computer was crashing, but actually the whole usb ports and the card reader would disappear from the computer and I would have to reboot. That's what people said TO DO for my problem, which I was doing! Am I doing it wrong? Is there a another way? When I click the safely remove icon in the task tray and pick my device it completely removes the usb ports & card reader not just the flash drive. So I CAN"T use the safely remove.
That can't be right, can it?

I can't promise that any of my suggestions will fix that error, but they're not going to cause any additional problems so they're worth trying.
Follow Maxtor's instructions to uninstall the software then reinstall it. Then run chkdsk.
chkdsk d: /f will check the external hard drive to see if there are any file errors because you disconnected it without using 'safely remove'. eg, part of a file is missing, or the 'end of file' marker is missing. chkdsk will attempt to fix the errors. It's also possible the drive got physically damaged by unplugging it the way you did. chkdsk can identify bad spots (sectors) on a drive, move the data -if it can- and then lock those places so they can't be used again.
Again, I can't guarantee that this will solve the problem, but it's a place to start.
Volvogirl: it's not polite to jump into someone else's thread with a totally different problem. :(
