Thanks for your reply.
I'm able to login in safe mode.
I tried to do a windows xp system restore but that does not work anymore.
After doing xp system restore, when I login it shows the same error again and again.
I'd a chat with dell support and they said I've to do a memory reseating
or dell pc restore. I never did memory reseating earlier so I'm not sure whether
dell pc restore would fix the isse. can you throw some light ?
Thanks

Hi,
I wanted to know whether you made any software or any hardware changes..Does the computer has more than 1 Antivirus Software???You can try going to safe mode..Restart the computer and when it comes with a blue dell screen keep on tapping F8..You will get windows Advanced Option Menu..Select safe mode and pres enter and enter again..Logon to your user name..If it is booting to windows try doing a system restore(Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore)Also change the Virtual memory to System Managed Size(Right click on My Computer-properties-Advanced on top-Settings Tab on Performance and Maintenance-Advanced on Top again and click on System Managed Size and click on set-Restart the computer)..Just let me know what happens

I had the same problem with my DIM 8400, (with some symptoms that you did not mention). I suggest that you run your Dell diagnostics. especially, the Memory section. If no problem is detected, run it again. I had many of the problems that you referred to and went through a miriad of trials, including replaceing my hard drive and attempting to reload my XP. Nothing worked. the problem was one, (or both), memory Dims being bad.

When I ordered my 8400, being the tightwad that I am, I opted not to take the extended warantee. My warantee was for 12 months. The problem showed up about the third time I ran the Mem test. I had had my 8400 for 14 and 1/2 months when the memory went sour. I ordered my new memory from Dell and when it came it had the Dell logo on it and a life-time warantee; the original memory did not. I'm not sure that when a new system is ordered without an extended warantee that all the components are the same quality? That is purely conjecture with no evidence, other than what I mentioned, to substantiate it.

Good luck,

I suggest forget the mamory for a minute. It appears you have a bad driver (modem). Suggest you boot to the Advanced Menu and try the Last Known... option.

If that doesn't work boot to the Recovery Console (you'll need a "Re-Installtion cd for this) and enter this command"

disable  hsfhwich.sys

exit and restart.

Appreciate your help.
can you tell me how do I run the dell diagnostics ?
Also, I'm not able to login to safe mode after I ran the dell pc restore.
Even I did not go for the extended warranty and I bought it 5 months back.
can you tell me how do I get the new memory dims through dell ?
Thanks

If your sytem is only five months old, it should still be under waranty. If that is the case, call tech support @ 1-800-624-9897, option 3. You will need your express service code. You will get someone who's English is not good, but most are pretty knowledgeable. They will talk you through the process.
