Your procedure is correct. The installation is pretty straight forward, but you will have to answer a few prompts along the way.

Before you do this however, make note of ALL of the different pieces of hardware on your machine (network adapter, modem, video adapter, etc.) and make sure that the Dell site has Vista 64 drivers for all of them. Probably best to download and burn these to CD before installing the new OS. Have a look at this page for the correct order of installation. This is important. Good Luck!

Unless you have another computer nearby, please follow the advice to get drivers before doing the upgrade!!!

Especially the network drivers - you will not be able to go to the internet to get drivers unless you aleardy have network drivers.

You can download each driver from the support.dell.com web site as an ",exe". Copy to a USB memory key. (hopefully you will not have problems with USB drivers, otherwise, try a CD, as previously suggested. Or floppy disks.)
