Depends on the particular drive. Many will only work with Windows XP (e.g. the Dell brand drives) and some others will work with older Operating Systems but they need drivers.

If it's a Dell drive you are out of luck. If it's another brand, check the vendor's web site to see if it's compatible and if there are drivers. If it's not compatible you may be able to return it to where you bought it and get one that is compatible with ME (and 98).

FYI, some large flash drives will not work on older Win 98 or ME systems due to the limtation of the bios even if you the drivers for the flash drive.

Windows ME did not as a general rule install the necessary files, drivers, etc during the install process to operate a USB Flashdrive. Nine (9) files located on your ME install disk are necessary for the Flashdrive to work. The files are, USBAUTH, USBCCGP, USBD, USBHUB, USBMPHLP.PDR, USBNTMAP, USBPRINT, USBSTOR and USBUI.DLL. Do a search of your ME machine and see if the files are there. When doing the search use an asterick *  after the file name (ie, USBHUB.*) Do not use an asterick after the file ending in.PDR and DLL. If the files are not on your hard drive in the ME computer intall them using the extract feature. They are located on your ME install disk at (Win9x/Base2) Use Explore to open the ME disk, double click on the WIN9X folder, then double click on the BASE2 file cabinet symbol at the top left of the screen. Locate the files listed above, highlight, right click and select extract. If memory serves they can be extracted to the ME directory or folder. Most ME computer had two (2) 1.1 USB ports. Newer computers have two or more  2.0 USB ports. If your 2gb flashdrive is 1.1 and 2.0 compliant it should work. You can also purchase a 2.0 USB port card for the ME computer. The cost of such a card is usally around $15 - 20 dollars. Having both machines with a 2.0 port will make file transfer faster.
