Identify Browser

Dimension 4100 Windows ME
CD/DVD Drive Lite-On SOHC 5232-K
256 MB

I know this is a strange question but how do I verify the browser we are using?  I'm asking this because the Dell website shows that we are using Mozilla but I am opening an I.E. window and it shows (Version 6.0.2800).

Thanks

On the tool bar, click Help: then About Internet Explorer or About Firefox or what ever browser you are using and it should give the name and version.

Thanks for responding.

It says Microsoft Internet Explorer.  I just could not figure why Dell is showing Mozilla as the browser I am using.

karibari,

Where on the Dell Web site does this information appear?

It is on the "View Profile for..." page.  I meant to go to preferences but clicked on my name.

This is what is shows:

Browser used for Last VisitMozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; Win 9x 4.90)

karibari,

I never paid any attention to that portion of my profile. Mine shows nearly the same thing (and I have never used Mozilla to access the forum).

I think IE was initially derived from Mozilla, and for some reaon (maybe license or copyright) the Mozilla bit is kept in the browser ID when this is passed on to the receiving web site, but the MSIE6.0 identifies it as Internet Explorer v 6

In XP the info is stored in the registry at HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
and/or
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3090935711-3204504469-1825801191-1007\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
if you have multip[le user accounts there might bec additional places

the UserAgent value is the one that identifies your browser. For IE 6 it has the default data data

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Win32)

(the Win32 might be replaced by Win98 if that's what you have, not sure; also not sure where it is in the registry for that OS).

Incidentally, Spybot scan with tracks included offers to change it to something like Mozilla/4.0 compatible, if you don't want people to know you are using IE.

Thanks to everyone for responding.

We've been trying to rid our computer of trojans for a week so that  was the reason I questioned the Mozilla/I.E. stuff.  I realize it wasn't a big deal but I thought since we kept the anti-virus and spyware stuff up-to-date and still had problems, maybe what was showing up was connected.  Thanks again.

Mostly likely it is stating that your system has Mozilla/IE compatible browser, rather than actually stating the browser you currently have installed. By the way, Microsoft IE was based on NCSA Mosaic. Hope this helps! :smileyhappy:
