Inspiron 15 5558 - very slow

Hi,

I recently bought a the 5558, roughly six or eight weeks ago; I have been very disappointed with the performance since day one. I do not use it often at the moment, and only for browsing and Office.

I've tried all the 'tips' that I found through Google searches, plus Advanced Systemcare 8 to defrag and optimise, plus the Dell System Detect (No issues).

Programs often take a long time to load, if at all, especially Chrome. Downloads are painfully slow (e.g. 15 minutes for a 70kb .doc file) despite speedcheck showing a 4.9MBps rate. Chrome and Firefox both frequently stall and a popup offers me to 'kill' or 'wait' for the page. Also when opening file explorer, it can take fully 5 minutes to 'find' anything - even in near-empty folders.

Any other ideas? Has anyone else had any similar issues?

The laptop did come preloaded with Windows 10 and I double checked the minimum requirements, there really shouldn't be any issues.

Thanks for any replies

Check task manager for high disk utilization.  If so, which program?

Use Clean Boot to stop all but essential services and find cause.

Stop Superfetch service if this is problem above.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmH4tjH2yMc

Windows Search is another service that can slow down the system.  Several more items to check   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dXvtTkqavs

Check /change your AV.  I found both Mcafee and Kaspersky cause slow downs, blue screens and general OS problems.

Consider stopping Dell Services that slow system down as part of clean boot above Service Manager.

Changing AV and stopping Dell and few other services helped my 5558 perform much better. I did not have a Superfetch problem.

Adding to the previous reply, my 3 year old 5558 with an SSD upgrade was working fine until recently. Tried most of the things suggested in this thread. Ended up doing a clean restore from image after backing up my files but it was still slower than molasses! Removed the default antivirus (Avast) and BAM, speed restored!! I also had to remove all references to Avast in the registry.

We bought the Inspiron 5558 laptop brand new years ago.  It was super slow from day one, so we ended up not using much over the years.  Sometimes, it would takes 20 minutes just to boot it up.  Other times, a light blue screen would appear forever.  That's when we do a reboot...sometimes more than once to get it go past the light blue screen.  Back then, Dell didn't publish any solutions onlines.

Now that our MS Surface broke, I'm looking into fixing our Inspiron 5558.  A friend finally told us that the blue screen of death usually means a bad memory chip.  So, I'm going to try to change the memory chip on it to see what happens.  It **bleep** that Dell would put bad memory chip(s) in new laptops and not recall them or at least provide replacement memory chip earlier.

I have a Inspiron 15 5568 that I bought last September with the same problem.  I don't even use it anymore because it is so slow..........even doing the simplest things takes forever.  So it sits in a cabinet..  I'm now trying to find an answer.  I will not buy another Dell as I wasted my money on this one where I had always been satisfied in the past.

Hi guys, check your time an date settings. Make them adjust automatically. To do so right-click the time in your Taskbar and select Adjust date/time. Also u can reset Windows store app. Resurces:

I bought this laptop in 2016, alot of time has passed since i have posted regarding every possible problem with this laptop. It throttles on anything. It just doesnt want to do any high performance related work. I can understand im talking from a gaming or video editing point of view.... But!! it throttles on utterly stupid things. LIke opening the memu emulator and opening a browser... or just using the chrome browser solo. And the biggest problem is the clockspeed of this laptop. It just loves to fall below 2.0 when heavy load is done on it. Absolutely loves to throttle. I just can never understand why dell built such a system which is clearly a kind of scam for gamers or editors or anyone who uses a computer alot.

I am glad I found this thread, I am not the only one experiencing the slowdown of a Inspiron 5558. I bought this laptop in 2016 and it worked well for sometime but then it has been awfully slow ever since I checked the start up programs, ran the full scan diagnostics and everything looks good so I am not sure what to do. I see that people have done factory reset but still experiencing issues. Any advise?

thanks,

Formatting does help!! I remember the first time i installed windows 10. Soo many unnecessary backup drives(The person who did all this is an idiot). Not even one drive helped me when backing up. Plus windows 10 helped me to screen record easily since it had an inbuilt game recorder. The fps is not great, but its better than when i was using bandicam in windows 8.1.
The reason ur system is acting slow is solely because of the clockspeed. It keeps fluctuating non stop. Undervolting somehow tries to keep it constant but that all depends on system temperatures.
I have done undervolting(Set it to -45.9mV), and have disabled power throttling in the registry. It helps to some extent but... it still ends up throttling at 75 degrees. One more thing, the battery causes extra power saving, soo its better to remove the battery to get even more max performance.
NOTE:I am not trying to make the system do double or triple the load that it will get fried. I am just unlocking the restrictions which makes it underperform soo poorly. Adding an ssd also helps out...

Okay, i found out what is the problem in this laptop. The system power limit throttles when it is on load. There is no way to fix this from your side. Disgusted that such a feature is added in this laptop, and there is no way to even make any kind of changes from the bios or from xtu. Its pointlesss upgrading to anything on this laptop, because the defect needs to be fixed first from dell's side, because its power limit throttling. I hope that dell can answer about this. I just regret that i found out about this very late or else i would have taken this laptop and slammed it on the sales guy. Worst laptop period.

Yea Soo Dell has done an amazing job from the very starting regarding this laptop. No help at all from their side, plus no one who has used this specific model, has given any kind of advice on the internet, regarding it. I am amazed as to how long it will take for someone to message regarding the problems of this laptop. Well, I got help from Unclewebb and got most of the problems fixed, and i am glad to say that dell didnt care since they never gave AF!! Anyways the first thing you need to check  is whether your system is power limit throttling, because in my case, it was power limit throttling(The CPU, not the GPU!!) and what i came to know is that dell has added restrictions in place just to prevent the  system from not performing, and its not like after these restrictions are removed that, it  will give double or triple the performance. Don't expect anything great. Long story short, you cannot fix the power limit throttling which comes from EDP current itself but you can fix the pkg power by giving a false reading. And that is done by the power cut method. Anyways do check it up in the techpowerup forum, i think that is the name of the forum, you wil see mypost over there, and like i said, dont expect anything from this system. Its been a week and what i noticed is that though multi tasking is  better now, since the edp is still throttling, its sstill holding the system back. So adjust the vccin to 1.8V and then enable the power cut when the system is idle. and by system idle, the system should be between 1 and 5V, that way when its locked at this reading, it will not cross 15W and trigger the power limit throttling. Anyways that only prevents the power limit throttling for pl1 pl2 but it wont take away the edp current throttling. Soo the person who helped me ie unclewebb informed that since the main thing is disabled which helps the edp current from throttling. Soo i cant fix that, otherwise maybe the system would be able to perform even better than it is currently now. And yea i did the Cinebench  r20 benchmark test several  times, and the score goes up to 527(max), anything lower than 500 and you're in big trouble, atleast now i can keep multiple programs side by side and do stuff, sure the system slows down but its not as bad as before where i could only open 1 program at a time. Soo hopefully this helps out. Before i could only undervolt to -49.8mV but after powercut its -89.8mV, but again i have to do it everytime i restart the computer because without powercut enabled the system will get hanged if its set at -89 directly on startup. Soo its not easy for me to do this but i have got the hang of it(just delete the ini file and redo the changes again daily). I will be posting videos regarding this laptop, but that much i  know, this system is not fit for gaming, not even a low end game, its better if you let this laptop rest in piece and  get a new system. Its not worth your time repairing it.
See i have done thermal paste change, removed the laptop keyboard itself(temps fell by 20degs while gaming),  and even did all this, ie powecut, undervolting and everything and even then the system is bottlenecked somewhere or the other. Really disappointing, Never going to buy a laptop  ever again.
