Hello jubillee :smileyhappy:
Here are a few things to try.  I don`t know what you have checked, so please excuse if you have already done them

1. In IE click Tools  and "Sun Java Console" should be in the drop down box

If it appears there, check that it is enabled

IE/Tools/Internet Options/Security/Custom   (at bottom)Scroll down to bottom to
Scripting of Java applets
Check “Enable”

Then click the Advanced Tab
Scroll down and make sure Java is enabled here too

2. Register these dlls
Start/Run  and type in
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
OK

Repeat the above for all of the following dlls
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

3.Check if you have the latest Sun Java

http://java.com/en/download/download_the_latest.jsp

When you click on the “Download” button a check is run to see which version you have.  If you do not have the latest one the download will start and install it for you too. If you do have the latest you will be told so and no download will start.

If you have to install an update, after the EULA there is a page with
Google Toolbar and Google Desktop checked for downloading, so watch for this and uncheck the boxes if you don`t want them.

4. Go to your Control Panel
Open Java (You may need to switch to "Classic view")
Click the “Delete Files” button. Then OK.

Hi Dunedin,

Many thanks for your prompt and  detailed reply. I followed all the steps you gave and still have the problem. In step 1, you said that "Sun Java Console" should appear in the drop down box but it does not show up there. Since I have no problem opening the Costco site or having linked windows stay open on my wife's machine - also running XP Pro - I am beginning to wonder if the anti spam and security software on my machine might be the problem. She has Norton S/W and Zonealarm only on her networked machine whereas I have Norton S/W, Norton Internet Security and Webroot Spymaster on my machine and have been told that I am "a bit overprotected"..

If you have any thoughts on the possibility of it being protection related, please let me know. Any additional suggestions as to things to try would be gratefully accepted.

Mewanwhile, thanks again.

I think you could well be right. :smileyhappy:

Just had a thought
The window opening and closing immediately, makes me suspect that it's some sort of "blocker" that's causing it.

Protection
I don`t have (and won`t have) any Norton on my machine, so I don`t know what each package contains.
You should only have one firewall and one antivirus running.
Your wife has Norton S/W and Zone Alarm.  Does the Norton include a firewall?  If so she should not be running ZA.

You are running Norton SW and Norton Internet Security. I would be very surprised if you don`t have 2x antivirus or 2x firewall there.  There is probably a spyware and adware blocker in that lot too and I would bet that this is the cause of your problem.

Check all Norton products for
pop-up blocker  (if you have SP2 you don`t need a pop-up blocker)
ad-blocker
Java applets blocker

It is OK to run Spy Sweeper or any similar spyware protection program with a firewall and an antivirus.....I use it myself.  I actually believe you should run one of each, i.e.
One firewall
One antivirus
One Spyware guard running all the time.

If Norton has a spyware blocker running in the background you don`t really need Spy Sweeper

You are very welcome. :smileyhappy:

Glad you have found a workaround.

Problem is that I did everything that I could find/think of to configure the protection software to allow linked windows to stay open, etc. I have a gut feeling that I automatically downloaded an update to Windows, or IE, or Norton, etc that caused IE 6 to not work and play well with the other programs. When IE7 emerges from Beta testing and becomes the officially released beta then I might try that to see if it improves things.

However, a friend suggested a workaround which......worked. He told me to try another browser and suggested Opera 9. I downloaded and installed it and I can now keep linked windows open and even access the Costco site.

So, again, many, many thanks for your good advice and good counsel.
