Lost ability to save pictures from Internet

HELP!  :o)   I have always been able to save photos from the Internet into the folder "My Pictures." But as of recently I have lost this capability.

When I right click on a photo that I want to save, I select "Save Picture As...". I can then choose a name for the photo and select what type of file I want to save it as. Previously, I was given many options such as jpg, bitmap, etc. That drop down menu for type of file now only has the options ART or Bitmap now. However, even if I select bitmap, the file saves, and then rather than a thumbnail of the photo, I now see an icon that looks like a little document with a large red "A" in the lower right corner and some blue lines. I don't know what that icon is. And when I click to open the file it says I can't open it. And it won't open even if I try to associate it with a specific type of photo program. (Did I explain this really poorly?)

I am not sure exactly when this started happening and so I can't figure out if it is something I did. I did in the last few weeks load the software for my digital camera. Could this be conflicting with Windows XP for some reason?

And is there any way to fix the problem without completely removing the new software?

Any insights would be appreciated. Dell wants to charge me an arm and a leg to chit chat with a technician about this.

Do you use AOL?? I forgot the steps, but you need to turn off compression in preferences.

Did you clear out your Temporary internet files?? Did you follow the instructions from Denny Denham's link??

    To clear TIF:

Go to start-- control panel --classic view

    Internet options--General (tab)

Click "Delete Files"(check "delete all offline content) OK .  Next  click the "Delete cookies" button.

    OK.

See if these instructions help also. Good luck!!

P.S. Can you view pictures and thumbnails of other pictures you already have stored on you computer?? And open with "Windows Fax and Picture viewer"???
