Missing default beep

I have no idea how it happened but I am missing the  Default Beep entry under control panel/sounds. Here is a picture of my missing  entry taken from a good computer  http://charts.dacharts.com/2004-11-23/Ensign-1.png  I use xp home with SP2.  The WindowsXP Ding .wav file  which should  be played for this event exists in my  C:\WINDOWS\Media folder. I need this event for a program I run. Can someone help me to get this back?

samsung21,

Go to Start|Run, enter cmd and click OK. With your XP Reinstalation CD in its drive enter the following at the command prompt, substituting the letter of your CD-ROM drive for X:\.

expand X:\i386\ding.wa_ c:\windows\media\ding.wav

and press . Note that there is a space after wa_.

Thanks very much for the info Denny. In the 5 years I've been a lurker here  your quickness and ability to help others never ceases to amaze me.  While I was awaiting a reply I did a search of this board for  my problem, duh, shoulda did that before posting. Anyway it seems the uninstallation of some Norton products tends to hose this registry entry. I uninstalled nav 2002 before I installed nav 2003 and guess that did it. I ended up d/l a registry patch which made the cure painless. The thread may be read here

Hope this helps others in the future.
