PLEASE HELP! MY COMPUTER SAYS WINDOWS COULDN'T START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT. \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM.
I CAN REBOOT MY COMPUTER USING THE XP-CD BUT I CAN'T GET THE SETUP MENU TO TRY TO REPAIR THE SYSTEM. IT SAYS I CAN ATTEMPT TO REPAIR - BUT HOW?? ANYBODY OUT THERE THAT CAN GIVE ME STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS?
I'M NOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN BY "SFC" BUT WHEN I TYPED IT IN THE COMPUTER SAYS THE COMMAND IS NOT RECOGNIZED. I AM REALLY STUCK WITH THIS. HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO NEXT.
while there is a supposed fix, i have never heard of anyone actually managing to recover from the problem, a corrupted registry..
i think that you are going to have to do a clean reinstall of win xp et al..
according to microsoft, the problem with the corrupted registry usually happens when the computer is shut down while something is still writing to the registry..
i have never run into the problem with the corrupted registry BSOD, but i used to frequently see messages in my logs saying that my user profile could not be unloaded from the registry when the computer was shutting down:
"Windows saved user XYZ\XYZ registry while an application or service was still using the
registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The
registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.
This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to
run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at.."
there is a utility that addresses this problem, and maybe it will help to avoid the problem with the corrupted registry..
