need XP drivers for new Inspiron 531

Just bought an Inspiron 531 that came loaded with Vista. I did a clean install of my own copy of XP but now I need drivers for the SM Bus Controller, a PCI bridge device (the network controller?) and another unidentified PCI device. None of these are listed at the driver page for this computer and XP. The chipset is listed as an Nvidia® MCP 61. I don't know if I need updated drivers for that either. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Driver list is here: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&impid=-1&vercnt=1&osl=en&SystemID=INSP_DSKTP_D531&catid=-1&deviceid=14246&releaseid=R159026&servicetag=&os=WW1&formatcnt=1&libid=1

Sweetness, thanks Mumbo-Jumbo Dawg.   :smileywink:

I'll post up when I get things working, out of town for a week, so probably not 'til later.

Oh yeah, and then I'll burn a driver disc with all the appropriate files on it to save for later, just in case.   :thumbsup:

Hey, guess who stayed up late installing drivers instead of going to bed? Me of course.

I'm typing this on my new Dell Inspiron 531 RUNNING WINDOWS XP!

All the drivers that Mombodog recommended worked a treat.

You guys rock! Thanks to all.

BTW, paralelling this plea for help, I had also put in a help request to Nvidia and they got back to me earlier today with this zipfile for the chipset driver:

"You can click on the following link to retrieve your File. The link will expire in 7 Days days and will be available for 100 number of downloads."
http://download.yousendit.com/508F54B82E0299C4

I never tried it, I downloaded it just in case, but did not unpack it, so I'm not sure if it's the same one that M-dog recommended in the first place.

Anyhow, if it would benefit anyone, you are certainly welcome to download it from the above link and try it to see if it helps.

Here is the text from the Nvidia helpdude Re: the chipset driver:

Hello Rob,
The drivers on our website do not support your motherboard chipset fully. I am going to send you a newer Windows XP 32-bit ethernet driver which should work with your Dell Inspiron 531. This driver will be send through a 3rd party service called
www.yousendit.com since it is too large to send as a file attachment. Please be on the lookout for a seperate email with a download link.

Regards,
NVIDIA Customer Care

A big thank you.

" The drivers on our website do not support your motherboard chipset fully"

I wonder if there are some advanced features or tools with this version?  Anybody dare to compare?

I don't have a Inspiron 531, or I would try it.

Thanks for the link, If anybody wants this driver and the link above is dead, post here and I will upload it somewhere for you.

This note has been very helpful, thanks!

I've now got just one more driver to find - the USB Controller driver... anybody
have this issue and solved it?

I followed all except that the
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_162.18.html; link apparently no longer works.

I get "USB Controller PCI Bus 0, device 2, FCN 1" on the "Other Devices" in Device Mgr '?'

System is Inspiron 531; Installed XP; then SP2; then followed instructions on page 1 (having to omit second link).

Somebody put together a driver pack for the 531 here

USB controller driver is contained in this chipset driver

This is like the "Never ending Story"
:)
I am certainly glad someone besides Dell support is looking after us.
Thanks Mombdogie.
I realize that deals with ms make it difficult for dell support to actually fully help the customers stuck with Vista Home Basic, but....Gawd, who can live with that os!

Microsoft has a small fortune invested in Vista, I am sure they are pressing vendors like Dell to support Vista and move away from XP. :smileysad:

We shall resist!

Update to below the "===...":

Thanks for your help! This is awesome...

I don't know exactly which driver I loaded to fix the USB 2.0 problems,
as stated earlier, but apparently letting XP search itself for drivers for it
worked. I now have a great system, and no "?"'s on device mangler.

So, it was not a user-directed install, but pressing "Properties" and
then let windows update the driver. After install, it shows:
MS as the provider for "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller".

==================================

Earlier question:

==========

I tried the driver pack, however system still winds up without Hi-speed USB.

Here is the order I used:

XP (2002); SP2; 8.26_11.09_nForce; 162.18_forceware; WDM_R171 (Realtek HD Audio);
R73044 (Modem); AMD Away;

I clobbered that, and then tried this order:

XP (2002); SP2; 162.18_forceware; 8.26_11.09_nForce; WDM_R171 (Realtek HD Audio);
AMD Away; R73044 (Modem);

Any thoughts as to why the USB 2.0 drivers are not kicking in?

thankx!
