1st, switch the 2-RAM module's slots and check performance. If the 512MB module remains detected and the smaller 256 becomes intermittent (opposite of your present situation) then there is a problem with the MB or MB slot.

You might want to check to make sure you installed the modules correctly. It happened to me recently, my modules were not making contact with the motherboard correctly. As soon as I checked if they were making contact, everything was fine after I double-checked.
