OE6 re-configures itself

My prob. is this:

I configure OE6 according to my ISP’s info.

I try send/rec; all works fine.

I log off as user. When I re-logon as user and try to use OE6, I get error mssg 0x800ccc0f.

I check OE6 configuration and it has changed the incoming mail server to 127.0.0.1 from my original config. info as supplied by ISP.

No matter how often I reconfig. OE6 correctly, after every log-off or re-boot, it changes the config. for the incoming mail server to 127.0.0.1.

My ISP help desk tells me I possibly have a virus/Trojan/malware…

My OS is Windows XP Pro SP2.

My AV is McAfee PC security suite.

I have MS AntiSpyware. I have AdAware. I have SpyBot S&D.

All have latest updates, including Microsoft/Windows updates.

Running scans with all the above does not detect any problems…

Do I have any other options besides re-formatting?

I tried re-installing IE as per Doug Knox’s instructions at www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_ie_reinstall.htm

without success, even when using Doug’s VB Script for the command line.

I've "googled" 127.0.0.1 and got many hits but still can't figure out what it is all about; not too PC literate, I'm afraid...

Would appreciate some advice on this matter.Thank you.

Hi:

If you have your antivirus configured to scan your emails, try disabling it. See this: http://forums.wugnet.com/oe6-save-pop-settings-ftopict447081.html

joe53,

Thanks for your response; I read the info. in your suggested link.

I disabled McAfee's e-mail scan, re-configured OE 6 to spec. and tried send/rec and all worked fine.

Logged-off as user then logged back on and tried OE 6...problem still remains...Tks for input.AR

I don't use McAfee, but I'll assume you disabled both incoming and outgoing email scans:
To disable scanning of inbound or outbound e-mail:
1
Right-click the McAfee icon, point to VirusScan, and then click Options.
2
Click Advanced, then click the E-mail Scan tab.
3
Deselect Inbound e-mail messages or Outbound e-mail messages, then click OK.

If you google that error code you will see that most of the hits suggest that email scanners and/or timeouts are responsible for the dropped connection.

Do you use a software firewall?  Some of them (eg. ZoneAlarm) also have email scanners that can be disabled.

You also might try increasing the 'server timeout' to a value greater than the default of 'one minute':
-Open OE6, click on Tools>Accounts>Mail tab>Properties button>Advanced tab, and move the slider for 'server timeout' to the right.

Finally, you might try the generic OE6 tuneup suggestions from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/oerepair.mspx

joe53,

Thanks again for your input; I had done the email scan disable properly. I've followed the link you suggest and followed several others suggested from there. I've printed some of the articles/intructions. I won't have time to explore/apply all the info gathered at this time. I must leave home for the week(work related) but will further work on this next weekend.

Thanks for all the good leads! AR
