Hi. I am in the same boat as you, and I just made a lot of progress. What you have to do to get it to where I am is to
download the printer driver for your printer that is written for your version of Windows Vista. Once you
attempt to install the driver, choose the option to
install a network printer. Then click on "
Manual Add" to add a printer that is attached to another computer. Then select the option that reads "
Peer-to-Peer Client" in order to install a printer that is connected to another computer on the network. Key in the computer (host) name, then key in the share name. You can find out the name of the computer by right clicking on My Computer on the computer running XP and click Properties. You get the share name from right clicking on the icon of the printer on the computer that is hosting the printer (XP) and click sharing (in case you don't know). Finish the installation using the correct computer name and share name. Set the printer as the default printer after you have completed the installation.
Now the problem I have is there is a dell software window that comes up and says "communication to the printer failed." The only problem that makes sense on the list is that the firewall is blocking printer communication, but I haven't figured it out yet, and that might not be the problem. It acts like it's going to print something, but nothing comes up on the XP computer. Anyway, I just wanted to help you and post this on here for my own reference. Good luck, I hope you get farther than I am now.
