Printing trouble: Printer prints blank page

I just got a new Dell XPS 400.  I installed the printer drivers for my HP PSC 2110xi.  I then plugged in the USB cable.  Windows recognized the device, installed the drivers for it, and all was good.  I received no errors from anything -- Event Log, Print Manager, or the Printer.

When I try to print something (from Notepad, Word, and Excel), the printer loads a piece of paper, the print head makes a single pass over the paper without dropping any ink, and then the paper is ejected and the print job is finished/done/gone.

I have ensured that I'm using the most up-to-date print drivers.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the print drivers multiple times.  I have plugged the printer into different USB ports on the XPS.  I have flushed the print spooler in Windows.  I have removed all USB devices in Device Manager and had Windows re-detect them.

I have had HP support on the line.  We have ruled out any issue with the printer since it can self-test, run a diagnostic, I can scan from it into Photoshop, and the printer continues to work with my old computer when I plug it's USB cable into the old computer.  The Dell won't print to it!

At this point I'm out of options to try.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

did you remove the strips from the bottom of the printer cartdrige? Before you install the ink you have to remove the clear strip from the bottom.

Can you print a Windows "Test Page" - right click on the printer (in the control panel/printers) then left click properties.  Click the "Print Test Page".  If that works then the USB, Windows XP, etc are working with the Printer.   If it doesn't work, try a different USB cable - HP devices tend to be very sensitive to the interface cable (I've had a brand new cable not work on one HP printer but it would work on others - I got another USB 2.0 cable (different brand) and it worked fine).

If that doesn't work, suggest you do a System Restore back to a date/time PRIOR first attempting to install the printer.  That will give you a fresh start and you can try the installation again.

Thanks for the reply.  I tried printing the test page, and got the same behavior -- the page loads, print head makes a pass w/o spitting out ink, and the page ejects.  I'll try getting a new cable next.

Had all sorts of problems with this printer and my Dell M70; eventually we got them speaking but like you had the blank page:

This worked for us, it appears to be supplied by "HP Staff" so they should know about it really...

Please follow the below given instructions to get the issue resolved which is caused due to DEP feature of Operating sytem.

Disable the Data Execution Prevention in Windows XP and check by following the below steps:

1. Click on Start

2.Control Panel->System->Advanced->Performance->Settings->Data Execution Prevention

It needs to be set to "Turn on for essential windows programs only", which is the default.

If you set it to "Turn on for all programs except those I specify", then the all-in-one driver stops working and you get blank pages.

1) Right-click on My Computer, and select Properties.

2) Click on the Advanced tab.

3) Under Performance, click Settings.

4) Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.

5) Select the Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select: option.

6) Click Add....

7) Browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpzeng05.exe
Or
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpzeng07.exe

and click Open.

8) Click Apply.

9) Click OK, and OK again.

Then restart the computer so as the chages to be effective

Since the printer works on your old PC and can self-test, this is likely a driver/communication issue on the Dell, not hardware.

Try this quickly:

  • Install the printer using “Add printer” → choose correct USB/virtual port (like DOT4/USB001) instead of auto-detect
  • Use a different/compatible driver (sometimes older HP PSC series drivers work better than the latest)
  • Set it as default printer and disable “print to file”

To double-check, print a simple test from https://printertestingpage.com if that also comes out blank, it confirms the issue is with how Windows is sending data to the printer, not the document itself.
