Try here for installing 98 for a computer without a operating system

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221829/en-us

try here for the boot disk and make sure the disk when made as fdisk and format commands on it

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

and once you've done the above and BEFORE attemtpting to do the install, if you will send me an email address that you can get a pdf file through and I will send you the instructions on how to do a clean install from c:

Instead of the 98 disk.

Do I have to put wind 98 on there or can I just put win XP on there; I do have a copy if XP that I got from a friend but  it is the upgrade. Do I need to get a original copy. Or is it wise to use win 98se and then upgrade?

I would like to thank you for your help as well because I have been driving myself crazy

You can also send me pdf files to ncheisser@jam.rr.com

You want to make sure the BIOS you have supports WIndows XP. You can check here at the Dell site for the most recent BIOS and installation instructions for the BIOS. Make sure you follow the directs to the letter as the BIOS is in effect the heart of a computer. Without it, the computer is dead.

Also you need tomake sure you have enough supporting RAM. With those two bridges crossed, just make sure you have whatever drivers are needed for the laptop and are xp compatable.

Which drivers you will need will depend on which os you install. XP Pro and Windows Home XP both have a good compliment of drivers for much of the recognized hardware names. When the os installs you could let it choose for it has avaialable so you could use them.

Do you know which manufacture's hardware is in the laptop?  Sound, video, cd or dvd, etc? If so start from there and check both Dell's site and the manufacture's sight for updates.

Start at the link below and use the make and model to identify the lap top.
