i just recently installed sp2 on my dimension 4400 and im having problems, yesterday, it didnt like my firewall and virus programs, and today i found out my computer wont start up. it just asks what mode i want to start in, safe or normal. i put in the disk to reinstall xp, and chose the repair option, and it asks for an admin password...how can i find this password? is there a better way to do this? i also want to remove sp2
Click
Start, click
Run, type appwiz.cpl in the
Open box, and then click
OK. Click to select the
Show Updates check box. Click
Windows XP Service Pack 2, and then click
Remove.
Follow the instructions on the screen to remove Windows XP SP2.
on a different computer, i just reinstalled xp, and it got rid of sp2, but i tried this with mine, and it told me i couldnt, i think i was becuase of the password thing.
Upgrading any system more than 2 years old to SP2 can be risky. Certain software, BIOS versions, CPUs (including P4), and integrated controller chips are not compatible. Automatic updates to SP2 should never be allowed on these systems until all homework is done.
Do you mean that whenever you press F8 and attempt to go into Safe Mode, you get the black screen and then go back to the same selection screen?
With the proper BIOS and driver updates, SP2 is not only safe and very functional, it is almost foolish not ot have it. I'm running on systems in excess of three years old and we have yet to have a problem. I will admit, that none of these systems has been an upgrade, we totally wipe the drives and load a fresh image.
