Random Unsolicited Right Mouse Clicks

This is about my wife's computer, that I can't use to post this -

I get random location mouse right-click windows that pop-up on my screen. This happens regardless of what application I have open and even on my desktop when no one is near the machine. This condition worsens while the PC is on, sometimes stops completely, sometimes increases to the point where the right click pop-up menu reappears as fast as I can click to get rid of it!!!

I have used external keyboards, external mouse's, different mouse drives and manufactures, disabled and used different mouse/kbd Sw drivers to no avail. I have gone in and stopped all but critical services and it continues. I have gone all the way down to reformatting the drive and reloading all the SW to no avail.

I have an Inspiron 1100 Laptop, XP Home.

I have never seen or heard of this any where else - and I work in the IS&T industry and can find no one who has ever seen this.

I need help bad.

Certainly not my forte' but this would seem to be a problem with the integral mouse on the laptop.  If in warranty, I'd let Dell have a look at it...if not, your decision but I am skeptical that this is a software issue.

Thanks for your reply - unfortunately, I am 1 month past warranty - wouldn't ya know it!

If you are right I might consider ripping the touch pad out myself and using and external mouse - if that didn't work I'd at least have some aggression relief and satisfaction!

Before you vent your aggression on the laptop, have you run the Dell diagnostics? This might confirm where the problem lies.

Maybe someone in the Inspiron forums can help you. I have an Inspiron 1100 also, but I bought the 3 year warranty. It will be a year old in March. (My desktop will be 3, no doubt, it will quit after it's warranty is over))

I use an external cordless optical mouse with my laptop.

My company uses a lot of Dell laptops, and I haven't noticed this behavior with them, but I have found the exact same behavior with a Toshiba Portege (tablet PC) laptop that we have.  We have tried the same as you - removing peripherals and devices, even scrubbing and reloading the OS and software packages.  The random right-click behavior continues, even as soon as we get to the login screen.

We also notice that the cursor floats to the middle - use the touchpad to drag the mouse cursor left or right, and it moves right back to nearly the center of the screen, usually where the right-click menu is appearing.

Just wanted you to know that this doesn't seem to be just a Dell problem.  We think it's a touchpad problem, like the right-click button is stuck or something, and we're sending the Toshiba in for repair.

Ed, don't get too frustrated over it.  I am having the exact same problem with my brand spankin new Dell Dimension 4700C.  I am using a Microsoft wireless KB and Mouse combo and I get a random right-click almost every 10 minutes.  It is very frustrating.  I am actually a PC Technician and I have worked with the Tablet PC's as well.  I have seen strange cursor behavior before, but this is really difficult to diagnose.  Please let me know if you find a solution.

Thanks guys, people think I'm making this up I think!

Guess What Though - latest news on the mouse clicks. We started using an external mouse and separate driver and turned off the touch pad and killed the driver. This seems to reduces the occurrence of the random clicks, in addition, we added external ventilation, this seems to reduce the mouse clicks even more. However neither fix can be "scientifically verified" or is repeatable to the point I could say either "solution" is real.

But The News Is - It now only happens when we push the letter "g".

I'm beginning to think that this is related to the entire laptop surface.

Still investigating - can't let it go now!

i am having the exact same problem with the random right click issue. it seams to happen less when the laptop is on a hard surface and the right menu always comes up at the top left of whatever window is open . a full format didn't cure the problem and it still does it with an external mouse i think it could be related to pressure on the laptop case just right of the touch pad is there anything under the case in this area that could cause this to happen?

I am having the exact same issue I think so it is because of bad build quality of the laptop, the body is made of plastic which when kept on soft surfaces it bends it also bends the right click area of trackpad causing right clicks the only fix is keeping the laptop on soft surfaces
