removing startup items

How do I remove items that still appear in the msconfig startup menu?  Not that it affects my computer in any way, but is there a way to remove them? I used a program that deletes cookies/temp files, and has a startup menu option where you can remove or disable items, but even after I did that, those items are still there.

Whats up with this?:smileyindifferent:

You should be able to uncheck boxes of the programs you don't want to startup by selecting run and typing in msconfig and hit enter. Look under startup and services and just uncheck the boxes. You don't delete the program, just stopping them from loading. You can go back and recheck the box if you uncheck one you need.

I guess you didnt understand my question. I already know how to go into msconfig and uncheck the boxes. I mentioned in my question that Ive disabled these items. I was asking if there was a way to REMOVE them.

But if theres not, thats ok too.:smileyhappy:

No, didn't misunderstand at all. If you remove those from startup they shouldn't startup again. However, the program may put them back in startup. But anyway looks like you have another option listed here so goof luck.

Many apps have a 'load on startup' or similar option in their settings. They could be resetting the startup in msconfig if such an option is checked. So go to the individual app and see if you can uncheck it there.

For those that don't, you can also look in the following places: start/programs/startup; remove any shortcuts to items you don't want that might be there.

Or look in the following places in the registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

the items set to load on startup are listed in the right hand pane when you click on those keys in the left pane pf regedit. Right click on any you don't want, click delete.

(There are a few other places in the registry, but those are the most common ones for apps and the ones msconfig shows).

I understand that 'some programs have a load on startup option'.  I make sure I uncheck that box ALL the time. Thats not the issue Im having. Im wanting to get rid of items that still REMAIN in the startup menu even after Ive uninstalled them, and disabled them.  Do you get what Im saying here? Its not the new programs Ive installed that Im concerned about, since I dont load them on startup.

Just making sure you get it:smileyhappy:

Maybe I don't understand but will ask you if you mean under startup>programs? You talking about if you select start, programs you still see the old programs listed? I don't think so but if that is it just right click on them and select delete. Sorry but guess I am confused.

Oh ok...I see what youre thinking. No, Im not talking about startup>programs, the programs Im trying to remove are not listed there. Im talking about the startup menu from msconfig. You know, the things that startup when you start up Windows:smileyhappy:  I was looking to remove items from THAT menu. The other guy gave me a program to install, but I havent done it yet.
  But maybe I will.......:smileywink:

I was originally thinking msconfig when I first posted. You should be able to uncheck any program listed there under msconfig and stop it from loading. There are 2 places and that is startup and services under msconfig. You have to apply and save any changes. If you do this and they come back then as the other person said the program you are trying to stop is putting them back into startup. Sometimes that happens when a program removed from startup is opened again. In that case look under the programs settings and remove it from starting up when windows starts. Can you give us an example of the programs you are trying to stop? You mean they are showing up in the systray down by the clock, right?

I have to be honest with you. You REALLY dont quite get what Im asking. You keep thinking Im trying to STOP something from loading. Im trying to REMOVE the item completely. Nevermind, I just cant keep explaining this over and over if youre not getting it. I will just try to install the program that the other poster gave me.

Thanks to that person....sorry I forgot your name.:smileyhappy:

Ok sorry but nobody can help you if we don't understand. Your question asked was not obviously what you are wanting to do. I believe we have answered what you asked. Maybe you are not understanding what you are trying to do and asking the correct question. All we can do is try to help you from what you post. If you want to get rid of a program simply uninstall it.

Good luck!

Actually...YOU are the only one who didnt understand. The other poster gave me a link to install a program that CLEANS up msconfig, to REMOVE the name of the item that is left behind. Understand? Im not trying to UNINSTALL an item, or STOP it from loading. Im trying to REMOVE the NAME of the item that remains in MSCONFIG even after uninstalling it.

I hope that you understand now. It wasnt ME who wasnt clear in my question, since the other guy understood it.

Have a nice day:smileyhappy:
