Roxio VCD burning

I just made a VCD disc for the first time. I tested it in my home DVD player, which says it supports CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+,- R, and DVD-RW, and it played the disc, but there was no sound. But then i tested it on my laptop, and the sound worked fine. Can anyone give some input on this?

Actually, DVD Players are dropping support for VCD in increasing numbers… The fact that it plays OK in one place indicates there is nothing wrong with the disc.

Take the disc to an electronics store and tell them you are interested in a Player that can play this VCD disc. It is a fast cheap way to test your creation.

Since a DVD is created at nearly twice the resolution of a VCD, have you considered stepping up to DVD?

    Edited.

Jim beat me to the answer.

To add, I've tried 3, recent 2005 model DVD players from Sony, Panasonic, Go Video, etc and none of them would play a VCD of any type.  I've tried it with Roxio V7.5, Nero 6 and 7 and neither produced anything that was useable in a DVD player.

DVD's as Jim mentions work fine.

If you're looking to replace your DVD player, I'd recommend the Philips DVP642. It plays VCD, SVCD, Divx as well as normal DVD's. Amazon currently has it for $40.

Dave, have you actually tried the unit you list?  I'm not in the market for a new DVD player, but I've tried ones that say they are compatible with Video CD's and none have worked.

I have had the same results with my last 2 Sony's. The claim they will but will not play a burned VCD. Likewise only one of the 2 will play burned Double Layer DVDs…

Both do carry a disclaimer about not working with consumer produced media.

firebird, I have 2 of the Philips DVP642 players.  It plays just about anything I throw at it.

By any chance, did you finalize the CD?

Technically speaking, the encoding on a VCD is based on the that of an audio CD (hence the playback length is the same as that of an audio CD created from the same CD size) so if there is no support it should at least have audio.

On a personal note, I find Roxio cumbersome in creating VCD since their Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6.  Try using either Nero 6 or 7 - it's much simpler.
