Runtime Error
All of a sudden, whenever I log on to Windows, I get the following error message:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error
Program C:\Program files\Common files\updmgr\updmgr.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.
Of course, I can prevent this by removing that application from the startup list but would appreciate any other solution to the problem.
Which brings up another problem; I tried to do a System Restore, but the only restore point available was early today. I installed many programs during March but, when I click on the back arrow in the April window nothing happens.

According to this article, "updmgr.exe" is malware, usually part of a "peer-to-peer networking" program. See the first link below for advice and instructions. Note that the procedure for submitting HijackThis logs has changed, owing to the popularity and expertise of our resident expert, ChrisRLG.

Many thanks, Jim. I have no file-sharing programs installed but it was, indeed, caused by spyware. I had not run Ad-Aware for some time and when I ran it it found 247 suspicious files! I quarantined them all and my problem was solved, thanks to you. I have since installed Spybot, SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and WinPatrol. Together with Norton Firewall, that should di it.
