Every day I get the same automatic update (KB828026 Critical Update for Windows Media Player Script Command) and now have 7. How can I keep from getting this day after day. Wastes my time and is an inconvenience. Thanks.

Stephen, I get the update automatically everyday (about 10, now!) When it tells me it's ready to be downloaded I do that, and it does NOT say to restart the computer, but I've done that, too, and it doesn't help. I am so sick of this that I will soon completely remove Windows Media Player from my computer. Clearly there is a Microsoft problem with either the player or patch. Thank you; I did go to the site you gave me, but am not sure I understand it all, but don't think I should have to do anything much if the patch comes to me on its own.
I have been having the very same problem, but only since i have installed the media edition and i too have re-started after instlation but each day i receive the same update, it's driving me crazy. If you do find the solution please let me know and i will do the same.
Well, I installed (successfully) the same update from the website for once, and now have 10 automatic ones plus the website one, but it still kept on, so I completely removed the program (Win. Media Player 9) and reinstalled it. Today I continue getting the autom. update, so it looks like I'm going to uninstall the program for good and use just RealOne Player.
Microsoft Security Baseline Analyzer just does a scan of your system for what known security vulnerabilities exist. They will point you to a MS bulletin (i.e. MS04-007 for ASN.1) or to a Q or KB article.
Scan with this tool and perform whatever remediation steps are necessary (please manually install the patch so you can see if there are any error messages).
I'm thinking that you might have an error with the permissions that you have on the DLLcache. When you apply most security patches from MS, it is first written here (because the file needing to be patched is in use by the OS). Then when you reboot, it is copied from the DLLcache to the proper location before the GUI loads. There maybe a problem in this process. If there is, you can either rebuild your system with the restore discs that Dell gave you or you can research the DLLchache on http://technet.microsoft.com.
I am hesitant to download something I know absolutely nothing about. Is this the solution to stop those automatic critical updates for W's Media Player? How do I know this won't cause more of a problem? I looked at the site and didn't understand it. Thank you.
Just wanted to thank you; I went to that site and did the scan, but the only things found were, I think, related to Office and I have the Home edition, but I believe I've temporarily stopped the problem with the suggestion that followed yours, and Micr. now tells me they're working on it and maybe in a couple of weeks will have it fixed.
Hey guys, if this is still a problem, just wanted to tell you I fixed it (I think, I hope) myself last month. I went into Add/Remove Programs, scrolled down to the Hotfixes, and saw I already had another version of the update (showing as wm828026). I removed that version, installed the new one, and everything was okay. Not a scientific approach, but I just guessed it had something to do with installing the fix both before and after installing WMP 9.
