satellites

I am moving to a remote location in Tennessee. There is no cable access, therefore no DSL service. Is there a way to access a satellite connection for the internet without DSL through a cable or telephone company?
Any help is appreciated...

And the answer is a resounding maybe. See if there any local Satellite TV providers in your new location.

You can start your research at http://www.direcpc.com/index2.html and jump links from there. I too am in a remote area and the only problem that I am seeing so far is that I don't know if I have a clear view to the satellite that carries the service.

Try this site for Pegasus http://www.pgtv.net
But expensive at $69 a month.
    Download speeds are unbelieveable.

Say what!?!? You are absolutely correct about being expensive, but read carefully about the download speeds before investing. 400Kbps is hardly unbelievable. I realize that if there are no alternatives, that may seem like a pretty good deal. However, I would slit my wrists if I made that up-front investment, and then had to pay $70/mth for a maximum of 400Kbps (my opinion only). You are better off paying $20/mth for 56Kbs unless you have money to burn. For a cost reference point only, I get 1.525Mbps on a direct pipe to my provider (in other words the maximum) for $32.99/mth.

My only intent here is to get you to think about this very expensive investment before jumping in. Although there may be no other alternatives, which is why it is so expensive, I can't help but think you will be kicking yourself for signing that one year contract to get the installation "discount".

I was just going by what the sites say about download speed. DirecTV's link to Direct Way says download speeds up to 400Kbps, and Pegasus is a little more vague saying seven times faster than dial-up (7X56=392). If they are understating their capability, then I stand corrected. If they told me I could get up to 1.5Mbps, and it was my only alternative, I would probably swallow hard and pay the $70. But as I stated before, not for 400Kbps max. Also, If you can't get 48-50K (which still blows) on a modem you have a phone line or modem probable that is fixable. Once again, just my opinion, but the difference just doesn't seem worth $50/month for the performance they are stating as the "up to" speed. I don't know, maybe I would change my mind if I knew I was staring at a lifetime of dial-up without the satellite.

I pay $60.00 a month. Download speeds are anywhere from 1500Kbps to 100Kbps, depending on what time of day it is. Some of the satellites are overloaded, as mine is at the present time which causes the slow download speeds. We have to share bandwidth and evenings and night when transponders are crowded, speeds will slow down.

Overall I am satisfied with my system. You have to look at the whole picture. One thing is you don't need a phone line if you use a two way system, which if like I was had a dedicated line just for internet use.

If you can't get cable or DSL, and your connection speed on dialup isn't up to par what other option do you have? I wouldn't go back to dialup if they let me have it for free. Also, you have to remember, 56K isn't your actual speed. You will be lucky if you connect at 40K. I think 400Kbps is a great deal better than 40. If you are a early morning surfer, you will have download speeds around 1300 to 1400Kbps. Not too shabby in my book.

I am interested to know how this can be fixed. The best connection I can get is 26,400. We have a local phone company and according to them it is the lines and they are providing what they have to. There are no other alternatives. We do have cable but it is unreliable even for TV and their connection fees for internet is from $50 to $100 per month plus the $35 to $40 cable fee.

    mmoffet,
I was going to post a link for you to test your phone line but the Dell Knowledge Base is not available( to me a least ) at this time.

If you can access the Dell site ( Dell Knowledge Base ) Type HO1042823 into the search box. This will give you the info you need.

If you find that the line fails all or some of the tests call your phone company.
