I have done something that causes my laptop (XP Pro) to go through a bunch of pull down windows that I have to check before it shuts down. Can someone tell me how to get it back the way it was so it will shut down with all the hassle.
Can you please be more specific, "pull down windows" is very ambiguous. And there shouldn't be anything you have to check when you shutdown - to me that sounds like spyware or viruses - I suggest you run a complete and throurough scan of your computer using the the most up-to-date definitions from the download site.
Unless you mean "This task is not responding, End now?" - is that what you mean?
There is little you can do that will stop those from coming up apart from either disabling it or forcing it to close the applications without prompt.
You can always try System Restore and see if you can find a time when it was not acting like this, this will help you to determine what caused the change.
Here is a test for you:
Go to start > Run > type in "shutdown -s -f -t 10" without the quotes.
That will run a command that forces programs to close when it shuts down.
They are actually pop's that in one example says " This program not responding, You can end the program and you get another window for a different software. The first one always says "MB_Dummy Window"
I will try the string and see if that closes everything.
Oh yeah, if you want to, you can make a shortcut out of that string as well - just go to the desktop, right click, go to New > Shortcut, then type in the string, (you can change the number on the end as well, to determine how many seconds you want it to take before the shutdown completes), press OK then finish I tihkn, then to run it just double click on it.
In the string, if you replace "-s" with "-r" it will restart, or if you replace it with "-l" it will logoff.
Also, try installing the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service from here:
There is another soltuion I have just found, but I am not sure that it really works - I mentioned that "There is little you can do that will stop those from coming up apart from either disabling it or forcing it to close the applications without prompt."
This is possible but I did not bring it up because I am almost certain that it won't solve your problem, but it would be good if you can test this for me.
Then save this to your desktop as "shutdown.reg" and close Notepad.
Double-click on the .reg file, it will ask you to import, just say yes, and if it was successful, it will say OK. You can delete shutdown.reg after this.
Please try that out and tell me if it solves the problem instead of the string/shortcut I suggested - keep that on hold for a minute!
Thanks again,
Robert
