I have a Dell Deminsion 8400 with Windows XP 5.0 and SP-2
My system restore does not work and I have a HP memories program that does not recognize my cd writer.
I have spent  a combine 9 hrs with Dell on the phone and their chat progrm without andy results.
Dell even sent a tech. to my house and installed a new cd writer and he claimed that he corrected my system restore which he did not.
Is there any  hope for me

My System Restore does not work either.  Had a major crash in September due to an apparent system conflict with a very well known antivirus program update.  That is when my System Restore stopped working.  Cleaned everything off the hard drives and started over again with reloading Windows.  The installed the other well known Virus & Internet protection system that starts with the letter "N".  Still System Restore did not work.  Went through the MS procedure clearing out any possible infected restore points.  System Restore still does not function.

Dimension XPS Gen 2, Intel Pentium 4 - 3.40 GHz, 1024MB RAM, Windows XP Pro, Op System 5.1.2600.

The only thing I can tell you is that I discovered the fact that system restore during a during a lenthy sessiion with Dell on the phone; does not work.
Dell sent a tech to my home to install a new cd writer and to check out my system and according to the tech. everything is working find except for the fact that my HP memories disc program does not recognize the cd writerand that dell has no control over that. I also went through  a chat session with HP and they advised me to insert the HP all in one installation disc into the CD-ROM and search for hpq_0002.msi file and under "memories disc creator" folder and uninstall and reinstall that.
I simply couldn't do that.
When I attempt to use sytem restore I get a screen that says you system cannot be restored.
On a HP wed site I read where  a number of people experienced system restore not working  after installing SP-2 on Windows XP

Odius and Chasbox,

I thank both of you very much for your input.  You may have given me the the tools to make this PIG sing, one way or another.

No problem, glad you read it before the moderators deleted it. I guess you can't get away with using $$ for ss. :smileyvery-happy:

< Find and purchase Nortons GoBack 4.0 and tell Windows Restore to forget it. I never got it to work either. That is why I use NGB. It has saved my plenty of times.>

Usually once the system restore function becomes corrupt the only way to fix it is to turn it off>restart your machine and restart it.Go to control panel >system properties> check turn off system restore.

Catalina II,

I don't know whether you got your system restore to working.  I did not, after trying everything and I found out that it is my NORTON INTERNET SUITE that stops it from doing. " ccSvcHst.exe -- Application Error" and ccSvcHst.exe is one of the Symantec shared folders. mad smiley
