Transfering files

Question

This might be a networking issue.

How do I move files from one computer to another? I do have a wireless internet connection (Hawking) that both computers use. But, to my knowledge that doesn't necessarily mean they are connected to each other. My computer geek brother came over and wasn't able to find a way to connect using the wireless hub.

Yes, I think the 'hub' is a wireless router. Will I be able to share files with that connection?

You might want to get a new nickname for your brother...

Use the Network wizard on each computer to setup the network with the same name (i.e. NETWORK), and it will also setup file and print sharing. You then can easily share files. The "hub" you have is likely a "router".

Those instructions are incomplete.   Where is says '  Open the Network Connections folder. Under Network Tasks, click Set up a home or small office network'   My computer doesn't have that option to click. The option mine has are;   Create a new connection Change firewall settings Start this connection Rename this connection Delete this connection Change settings of this connection   None of these do anything that connects me to the other computer. 'Create a new connection' Asks me to name a computer that I'm connecting to. But, it doesn't actually connect.   Does anyone have a link to instructions on file sharing that actually make sense?

My computer doesn't have that option to click. The option mine has are;

Create a new connection

Change firewall settings

Start this connection

Rename this connection

Delete this connection

Change settings of this connection

None of these do anything that connects me to the other computer. "Create a new connection" Asks me to name a computer that I'm connecting to. But, it doesn't actually connect.

Click on Start, Control Panel, Network & Internet, then Wireless Network Setup Wizard.

The 'wizard' doesn't work. When I get to the part that I choose 'set up network manually' (I don't have a flash drive) It gives me an error 'Depending on the wireless software running on this computer, for details see blah blah blah'

You'll also need to provide EXACT error messages.

This thread has convinced me that any software written to work with Microsoft Windows is flawed. Doing something so simple as transferring files from one machine to another should never be so difficult.   All companies have areas of expertise that they are good at. Microsoft needs to admit that they are incompetent at writing operating system software and focus on whatever it is that they do well.
