Trapped in the .NET

In January 2010 automatic updates for .NET began arriving on my Dimension 2400 w/XP, the first I ever heard of .NET. Had no use for it. Nothing wrong with it, just didn't need it, spend most of my time doing simple non-NET stuff on WordPerfect. But I knew from experience that if Microsoft recommends it, accept it or be pestered constantly.

But since early October 2010 .NET updates have been piling up as my computer now refuses to install them. This message pops up throughout the day, sometimes during the refusal to install, other times when I'm minding my own business:

"NotifyAlert.exe -- .NET Initialization Error. To run this application you must first install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework: v1.1.4322, v1.0.3705. Contact your application publisher for instructions about obtaining the appropriate versions of the .NET Framework."

What is "this application" and who is its "publisher?"

I wouldn't mind if the missing versions 1.1.4322 and 1.0.3705 were in one obvious place reachable by Google, ready to be downloaded, but I guess it doesn't work that way.

What does work?
