Neither Microsoft or Dell will assist you with any AOL problem.  It's solely AOL's problem.  Here's the link provided by them to perform the function.

thanks, but I did everything that they mentioned on the help screen three or more times already without any success. It will not uninstall. I have also talked with aol and they told me that it was problem with microsoft.  they felt that I needed to uninstall and reinstall internet explorer. any other thoughts??  mark

I have windows xp and am unable to find files(folders) when I hit start- any other suggestions?

I don't have AOL but this is a generic approach. In Win98 you can look here for the uninstall routine. Use Start> Find> Files or folders and type in unwise.exe and\or uninstall.exe and look for the AOL folder in the list. If found try using that (AOL) uninstaller to remove AOL. If none are listed, go to Start> Programs and look for AOL in that listing. If found, expand the AOL listing and look for an uninstaller.

Sorry if this is too obvious, but did you try going to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs, highlight America Online, and click the Add/Remove button?

Again, I'm not trying to insult anyone, but you didn't say specifically why you weren't able to remove these programs.
