Ketilie,

Go here:  http://support.dell.com/support/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&~ck=bt

Click on  "Search for Drivers".  Follow on-screen prompts.

Once you have the drivers downloaded, you can find the correct order of installation here:  http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&docid=1A0C0937D62A8739E0401E0A55174744&l=en&s=gen

Hope this info helps.

Ketilie,

What is the model number of your Dell computer; i.e., Inspiron 1520?

Ketelie,

I think Dave5 is on the right track.  The XPS 420 uses an Intel X38 chipset.  See this discussion on installing XP on the XPS 420:  http://www.motherboardpoint.com/t174227-p2-installing-xp-pro-on-xps-420.html

Intel DX38BT drivers for XP are here:  http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2807&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional+x64+Edition&lang=eng&strOSs=109&submit=Go%21

I hope these help you get XP Pro 64 up and running on the XPS 420.  Let us know how you fare.

Note:  The above referenced discussion notes problems with the MiniViewer and BlueTooth.

I downloaded the chipset drivers. Its difficult to know if usb 2.0 is active because in the hardware device manager it won`t say. I think its supposed to say you have usb 2.0 controller there.

Ketelie,

Which chipset driver did you download?  You need to download/install the X38 chipset driver I referenced before applying the INF update that Oddvar referenced.  Otherwise the USB won't be seen in Device Manager.

Device Manager should have" Universal Serial Bus controller" listed

Expand click +  should be listed "Intel ICH9 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller-xxxx" twice and

a bunch of other USB hub listings and controllers

Ketilie,

The ReadMe file for the chipset you downloaded has this link regarding USB devices not working after installing Intel Chipset drivers:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921411/en-us

This may or may not apply in your case.

We've assumed all along that you can't see ANY USB controllers in Device manager.  Is this correct?  USB 2.0 Controllers do not necessarily show up with a designator as USB 1.1 or 2.0, they can simply show up as USB controllers.  I have seen some systems where it will show something like USB 2.0 Root Hub.  I have a USB 2.0 controller in my system and all it shows is USB Root Hub.

I finally got it working. I found this program called Driver Genius Professional. A little gem actually. It helped me find all the drivers for my system and downloaded them so all I got to do was to install them. So now it shows that I have usb 2 in the device manager. Check out the program:

thanx for your help Tony

Ketilie,

Glad you got the USB 2.0 working.  I'm sure there is a reason that XP isn't offered on the XPS 420, but some of us have applications that simply will not work on Vista.  Occasionally I run into problems that I have to go all the way back to some of the DOS utilities that I either purchased or wrote.   Just last April I used a DOS file copying utility written in 1985 to move some files from Unix to DOS and from DOS to XP.
