USB mouse won`t work

I have just installed xp pro x64, but the mouse won`t work so I am unable to install the necessary drivers. Are you supposed to let the mouse stay plugged in during installation. I unplugged it. What to do

Do you hear the notification when the mouse is plugged in?

Are you sure the mouse is good?  Try another mouse or try the mouse on another machine?

Did you try another USB port?

Does the keyboard work?  You can do pretty much everything from just a keyboard.

Sometimes with USB problems, if you power down, unplug the machine and press the power button for 10 minutes, the ports come back to life.
