Vista Windows WPD FileSystem Volume Driver Error Code 10

Vista Home Premium & Maxtor External One Touch III Turbo & WPD FileSystem Volume Drive Error Code 10 I am also missing WpdFs.dll and WUDFRd.sys I know that the Wpd one must belong to the driver I cannot install. In Devices, under Portable Devices it shows an exclamation point next to Microsoft WPD FileSystem Volume Driver. I selected Update Driver and it said that the driver was updated successfully. When I try to access my Maxtor External Drive, I get a code 10 error. The drive does not appear on my computer. I used my Maxtor all the time, now all of a sudden it disappears from my computer and at the same time I get a error code 10 if I run its software or it hangs and I have to end it. Then I found out that I was also getting an error code 10 because of this WPD Filesystem volume driver that says it updated, but really hasn't. It makes me think that the 2 problems are connected and that maybe if I can get the WPD driver to work, maybe my Maxtor will work also. I shut down the computer & reconnected the Maxtor (Firewire) and then put my computer back on hoping it will recognize the drive, but it doesn't. Also, some times when I put my computer on, I get an error message that Microsoft windows has to load the WPD FileSystem Volume Driver. I select okay. It goes throught the process of searching and installing, but then generates an error code 10. I go back to the Devices and select property on the WPD which still has an exclamation point and sure enough it says Device cannot start Code 10 error. Any ideas how to get this file to update. Nothing seems to work. Desperate! I have to be able to get on to this Maxtor Drive so that I can format it. It seems to have bad sectors and I have to return it to Seagate for a replacement. I really do not want to send it back with all my backup files on it.

This morning I started my computer and it did not ask to update the WPD driver, but it still has the exclamation point. Also when I went to Device Management, it said that Disk 1 was not initialized, (disk 1 is my Maxtor), so I said initialize it and format it, but it failed to initialize it nor would it format it.

I still think that I need that WPD driver to make this work.

At least if I get the WPD driver to work and my Maxtor still doesn't work, then I know that the Maxtor is bad for sure.
