The most common cause of this error is a failing hard drive that has developed bad sectors.

Boot the system to the Dell diagnostics by pressing F12 at powerup.  Run the EXTENDED (NOT just the quick) hard drive test.  This will take 90-120 min or so.  If any errors result, replace the hard drive with a new, 2.5" 9.5 mm EIDE (NOT SATA), 120 G or smaller, otebook drive and reload Windows.

If you have data on the drive you haven't backed up, it MAY be possible to recover some or all of it.  To attempt this, remove the drive, mount it in a 2.5" USB 2.0 drive case, attach it to a working system and copy what you can still read.

Then purchase TWO drives - one to replace the failing one, and the other to use for keeping backups.

I ran the extended test and got the following error codes:

Error Code 0F00:0244  Msg Block 56990838:uncorrectable data error or media is write protected

Error Code 0F00:1A4  Msg Block 56990838:uncorrectable data error or media is write protected

Does this mean tht I need a new HD?
