Actually it is more complicated! I have a Inspiron 8100 and XPS 1000B each with windows XP Professional! I have been happy with this operating system!
Of course, the XP 1000 has new-several years ago, legal XP professional software. It is dual booted with Millenium, the original installed software. THe inspiron came from dell with XP professional.
I purchased a second used inspiron 8100 recently but with the hard drive removed! It was originally installed with Windows 2000 pro! I can get a reinstallation disk for windows 2000 pro fairly cheaply! A new copy of Xp professional is significantly more! So I am trying to decide what to do!
The operation of the two operating systems is very similar. I've used both and the main difference from my point of view is that Windows 2000 uses the older Windows graphic interface, more like Win Me or Win 98. The only significant advantage of Win XP over Win 2000 is that you can still update Win XP. You can update Win 2000 up to the time that it was phased out about five years ago. That's a lot of malware progress that Win 2K wasn't designed to handle. Windows XP was recently updated to Service Pack 3, and even Service Pack 2 is still being updated.
If it were me the choice would hang on whether I was going to put the computer on line. If you're using it stand-alone, not connecting it to the internet, you can get away with Win 2K. If you plan to use it to browse the web or for anything else that requires an internet connection, you're much better off with Windows XP.
If you still want a features comparison, take a look at this article on Softpedia that has all features and functions from Windows 98 to Vista presented in a tabulated format.
Sadly, Softpedia is now a hackers haven. It is loaded with malware apps. Softpedia is the worst site on the web, in my opinion, to go to for anything computer related...unless you want to be a hacker - Then, I'd hope you get what you deserve!
