Windows Messenger

I have just acquired Dimension E520. Windows XP Home and included in this was Windows Messenger, I opened and filled in the fields but I found it was version 4.5! I though it was Live Messenger which I had before.

Now I can't seem to delete this, not even from Add/remove programme, it doesn't appear there, well not under Windows Messenger. I eventually right clicked and then properties and got to locate the file and deleted that way and it is now sat in my recycle bin.

I am not sure if this should be totally binned, I did just wanted to remove my email from the file but couldn't find anywhere to remove it, I could change the email but not delete, so hence it is now in the recycle bin.

I wanted to download Live Messenger which I now have.

Just wandering if the 4.5 version which was already installed would included some components or files that would relate to any other Live Messenger that I download, if that makes sense.

Me again...you can find the 5.1 download by doing a Windows Messenger search... I used MSN search.

Correction, the latest version for 5.1 isnt there, but there are some removal tools listed if you ultimately want to remove Windows Messenger.  You may also be able to update it by opening Win Mess and looking for how to update it.

Windows Messenger typically comes with some pcs.  It was originally designed for instant messaging in a business environment, however it functions as well for personal use.  It's a component of Windows and is not easily removed.  Better to keep it as a standby instant messaging application to supplement Windows Live Messenger.  Also, I would update yours to the latest 5.1 version.  If you choose, go to majorgeeks.com and get the latest there...look to the left on their home page and select...messaging...from there you can scroll down and find the 5.1 version to update to.  Good luck.

Not sure if I understand you....but you can install Windows  Messenger 5.1 over your current Windows Messenger version.  Windows Live Messenger is a totally separate instant message application.  The latest Windows Live Messenger is the 8.1 beta which easily installs over MSN Messenger or any previous version of WLM.

Windows Live Messenger does NOT install over Windows Messenger...they remain separate applications.

Thank you for that, I have downloaded LM and have the version I had before which is what I wanted.

I have restored the very old version back, but of course it still has the same email address as LM, so I just use Live Messenger. I can't seem to delete my email address from the original whatsoever I have tried, but it doesn't seem to give me that option, to change yes but not to remove. If I could remove it and then leave it inactive that is what I wanted to do, but alas.!

Since both Messengers are integrated into the Windows system, they use the same email address...and as you said...you can simply use either or both Messengers with that address.  However you can create a new .Net address and sign into either Messenger with the address of your choosing.
