If you are trying to update to SP2 from SP1 or SP1a via Windows Updates, you might consider downloading the entire SP2 from here:  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en 

Microsoft does not recommend this for standalone computers, but I've had to use this method on occasion when Automatic Update to SP2 kept crashing.

Before installing this SP2 package, disconnect from the Internet.  Using Task Manager, turn off all AntiVirus processes, AntiSpyware processes, Firewall processes, etc.

PS:  If you're really nice and get the right Dell tech, you might talk Dell into sending you a Reinstallation CD for Windows XP SP2.   Had a customer yesterday with an old Inspiron PIII.  He requested and received a Reinstallation CD for Windows XP SP2 from Dell just last week.

I've updated quite a few BIOS chips.  I always sweat blood whenever I do a BIOS update.  Had to replace an entire motherboard once due to a BIOS update programming glitch.  That's why I just turned off the SP2 update notice for my 4100 bench testing computer.  Works too good to mess it up.  Have SP2 on Inspiron and HP laptops.   Transformed eMachine T2692 into HP with BIOS update from HP (no BIOS update available for Tri-Gem Imperial motherboard on eMachine site).  Run SP2 on it also.
