Does the Green box show any text label ? or can you double click on it & open something.?
Can you use "Run" & type
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\taskmgr.exe , then click OK or pres Enter key.
If that works check Application , right click Application & select "Go to process"
this will then show the program ist using.

You could try running SFC , which checks protected System Files for corruption & if found replaces them from reinstall..XP CD .
If it prompts for XP CD , hold Shift key while inserting XP CD to stop Auto play.
Use Start > Run & type
sfc /scannow (space after sfc)
-------------------
Then System Restore to a point when it worked OK.

John, Thats it, "CPU usage box", but some times they line up across the whole bottom of screen (if I hit ctrl alt delete second time). The task manager does not open at all. What do you think?
Double click does not do anything, no text message, cant open, only right click to close, but computer will be locked up at this point and need reboot. I will try the "run" .......taskmgr.......and let you know what happens.
Gary, I tried the "run" for the taskmgr, and the CPU usage box appears again. No task manager. Double click does not do anything, only can close with right click.
The 'little green box' is TaskManages systray icon. Sounds like TaskManager *IS* loading and running, but just not displaying. To the OP, does TaskManager show in the taskbar as if it may be minimized?
If I hold cursor over the green box it says CPU usage, If I right click It says "always on top" and "close" the task magr does not open. As you may of guessed, I am not a computer wiz, so thanks for any help.
Asking the group here.... Is it possible that Taskmanager is opening for em but that it is totally off screen? Is there a switch that can be used to cause Taskmanager to open full screen when run from a 'run' command?
Yes, you can hide when minimized, but then he would get "Always on Top" "Close" and "Restore" Since he does not get Restore it is not hiding. I would do the System File Checker, like suggested. If that does not work, the next step may be to do a Repair/Reinstall.
gary,
When you press ctrl-alt-delete, you should get a green box in the system tray that displays CPU usage.

Ok , I see that , was confused as the Poster refered to the Taskbar & said there was no text .
Poster , Note : the area of the bottom right is called Notification & also System Tray.

ern,
One little green box is normal as it displays CPU usage. Does the Windows Task Manager open up with the 5 tabs on top?

Derf,
Yes it does show in the taskbar, but does not open. If right click, can be closed.
