WININET.DLL missing - Desktop blank
Used spybot last night, this morning when I booted up, desktop is blank and cant' get anything off of task manager. In Task Manager, if I try to open another task, the c: programs/windows file is full of uninstall files. Any thoughts - I have the disk to reload windows, but not sure if that is the problem. and don't want to wipe out all my files.

Sorry - when I did Dir c:\/p, the list included I386 as a DIR.
When I did Dir c:\windows/p, the list included SYSTEM32 as a DIR

File copied! Now what do I do? (Sorry to be so dumb about this but I have never had anything like this happen). How do I get out of where I am and how do I get everything back on my desktop and openable?compnovice53

wininet.dll is there!I'm presuming it's in C:\i386. If so then this should copy it to the C:\Windows\system32 folder (note all the spaces).
Xcopy /e /h /y C:\i386\wininet.dll C:\Windows\System32
Note: if this fails to correct the problem, at the C:\Doc......ings> prompt type in sfc /scannow with your XP CD in your drive and it should find any missing files.
Yes, they are both directories. Using the same proceedures as before, at the prompt type in (note the 2 spaces).
dir C:\i386 /p and look carefully for either wininet.dl_ or wininet.dll . One of those must be present to complete the fix using expand or xcopy.

no, no services box at all. I type in Services.msc after prompt of C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>
Nothing happens, no messages. New prompt of C:\Documents and settings\Administrator> appears 2 lines down.

Did that - nothing happens. It just goes to a new prompt for c:doc..ings\administrator
