XPS 15 9510 - Realtek Sound Echo Solved

Hi Everyone,

XPS 15 9510 - Windows 11 Pro
Version:  10.0.22000 Build 22000

Sound Driver:  Realtek
Driver Date:  11/2/2021
Driver Version:  6.0.9261.1

Issue

Playback on the built-in laptop speakers and when Bluetooth pairing Sony headphones was giving noticeable echo on voice recordings.  This issue was discussed with Realteck audio drivers introducing echo on playback, way back in 2019, but the laptop drivers installed are the latest to date from DELL so I was confused as to why the echo?

The only way I found to fix this was by modifying the sound playback settings to introduce a Microsoft controlled playback effect.  Thought to pass this tip along to anyone else suffering from playback echo (sounds like you are in a hard walled room, reflecting sound waves).

This fixes the echo sound for both headphones and laptop internal speakers.

Select Windows Sonic for Headphones

Hope this helps someone remove their annoying echo!

Some additional interesting information with MP3 files.

The new Windows Media Player recently released with Windows 11 was not outputting sound for MP3 files but was working for MP4 files, until I made this same setting change under...

System > Sound > Properties > Speakers and activated "Windows Sonic for Headphones".

THEN the new Windows Media Player played sound for both MP3 & MP4 files.  The Realtek drivers have some strange things going on with Windows 11 it seems.

Messing with "Spatial sound" didn't for me, but luckily I found another option. Instead I turned off "Enhance audio", right above the "Spatial sound" or "Spatial audio" option. Either way THANK YOU as I don't know how long that would've taken me to find on my own. Audio issues drive me nuts!
