XPS 8920, Windows 11 specs, TPM2 and CPU

Yes the 2017 XPS 8920 has TPM2 capability in the BIOS. But DELL is not including the 8920 in their WIN 11 upgradeability for some reason. I ran the WIN 11 system checker, said I needed TPM2 and that my CPU was not compatible. So I reboot my 8920, pressed F2, BIOS popped up. Was able to turn on the TPM in the security settings. Took 2 reboots before my computer booted normally. Ran the WIN 11 checker again, TPM2 all good, CPU still not compatible. WIN 11 specs say 1 Ghz or faster. I have a Intel 3.6 Ghz processor. Not sure at this point what's up with that. Just not happy with DELL that my 8920 is not included in the WIN 11 upgrade testing.

Well HECK, I hate it when that happens.  My 8920 is still going strong, and now forced to buy a newer computer when WIN 10 support stops or to get WIN 11.  But that is years off, so good for now I guess.

Your system is not compatible because you have a 7th generation CPU and MS specifies 8th gen as the oldest supported (there are two 7th gen CPUs included but they are in very specific systems). This is not  a Dell decision, this was decided by Microsoft. And there are a number of manufacturers that find themselves in the same situation.

Would Windows 11 run on your system, probably. But if you do manage to get it installed and running, and need Dell tech support down the road, Dell tech support will insist that you reinstall Windows 10 before they will offer assistance since you are not on the Dell compatible list.

Come on! 1 Ghz minimum for WIN 11, and I have a 3.6 Ghz, i7-7700.  For WIN 10 build 20H2, says its compatable with WIN 11.

@vpresley83 I agree with @JOcean ; it was Microsoft that decided the minimum requirements for Windows 11. The XPS 8920 was built for Windows 10, Dell made no promises about future a OS. Although you may be able to run Windows 11 on the XPS 8920 there is a risk that updates in the future will not work or that you will not get updates in the future.

After running Windows PC Health Checker on my 8700, I was informed a 2 core CPU is the minimum.  Mine is a single core and apparently not upgradeable.  I'm sticking with it until it can't do the job and worry about getting a better computer then.

That is surprising since all of the 4th gen on this list, and I assume your CPU is on the list, are at minimum 2 core.

While you are technically correct, Dell should have been more forward facing with upward compatibility.  This will cost Dell dearly, and I for one will go back to HP at some point in the future when I get to the point that I can't live without Windows 11. Frankly it feels like Dell organized this with MS just to sell new new computers.  Nada.

Hi, I feel done too but I am going to try downloading Linux say Red Hat Developer edition and installing that on my computer and running windows as a virtual machine. Im not sure but win 11 might work that way???. But if not I will have Linux and Win 10 which are 2 great operating systems to choose from.

Please note I have'nt done this yet as I am awaiting for a dell laptop to be delivered before I do an image backup of my desktop to network folder and to DVD. I have never done this before but I think it will work!!.

it has to do with security of the cpu , not the speed, , 8th gen has new security features built into the cpu that windows 11 utilizes, ,

ECACTLY!  I have same one, and it can handle anything i throw at it.  I dont understand how they can exclude this processor from their list.  There are MUCH less powerfull ones in that list that ARE compatable...,makes NO SENSE!

Yes, but you wont get updates.  And with a new OS, you will need them
