XPS 8930 RAM Upgrade issue

Good day,

I have had an XPS 8930 for a couple of years now. I was installed with 16gb of ram (2133). I had thought (assumed...the worst form of 'thinking') that it was a single 16 gb ram card. Turns out it was 2x* ram cards (which makes sense, but I rarely run on common sense).

So I proceeded to buy the proper ram, but I bought a single 16gb ram card. It is of the exact specifiations needed to compliment the already existing 16 gb of ram (same dimm and such), but now I am in a quandry: should I send the single card back, or will it work with the XPS 8930? I am assuming it will be a big NO, but I would like to hear your advice on if (and I mean if) the XPS 8930 will run on 2x8 gb ram with a single (third) 16gb of ram? I have looked over the XPS manual, and, of course it does not give any specification for 'odd-man' 16 gb card running at the same time as two other similar 8 gb cards.

Any help and advice will be great. I am assuming I will have to send the ram back to the retailer (Dell).

According to the manual 2 16gb chips cannot be used. The supported ram configurations are on page 53.

Just because it's not listed in the service manual only means Dell hasn't tested that configuration and won't guarantee it would work.

There's no harm in trying. Put the new module in the slot closest to the CPU. Worst case, PC won't boot and then you can send it back.

But keep in mind with 2x 8 + 1x 16 GB, RAM will only run in single-channel mode. That's a little slower and less efficient than dual-channel mode, which requires matched pairs of modules, but you might not even notice the difference because you've doubled the total RAM installed...

We need more details.  What's the current 32 GB RAM config, 4x8 or 2x16?

Dell PCs can be fussy about RAM so not all RAM may work, even though it looks compatible.

Many users buy RAM for Dell PCs from Crucial, because they guarantee it works if they recommended it for a specific PC model or they take it back.

And new RAM may not be compatible with the RAM that's already installed, even if it works by itself after removing the existing RAM. So you will have to try, regardless of whether it's Crucial or another brand of RAM.
