XPS 8940, Better 3rd party cooler

Hello there

I would greatly appreciate any help to find a new/better 3rd party cooler for my XPS 8940. It came with the thin and small stock cooler and is overheating the whole time. I got a i9-10900 processor with 128 GB of RAM and I need this computer to generate some GIS layers. These jobs take 2-4 hrs every time and I can see that the processor is throttling or C° 97+ all the time.

I tried the Noctua 15S but the problem is there is no space for the bracket under the motherboard. The stock fan screws directly into the chassis from above.

Thank you very much

Thanks @Kelvin Lee !   I wish I good take the credit, but the software did it all !

I tagged you in my previous post about it ! Not sure if all the pictures will post as they seem to frown on m*i*n*i*n*g posts around here.

@bertro514 - that's weird that it fits differently. Maybe due to being thicker?  I'm using the Noctua fan which is 25mm, but I don't think mine sits like yours does.

Was your decrease in temps after you cleaned the filter screen ? I could see how that could do that. Me thinks you need to put it up on the desk, or get rid of the cat or kids !?!?!  Tough choices !!

And by the way, the pictures were obviously there !

  • @Jon-62  Your 80mm single fan bracket works great. I have it installed in front of my 3060ti card. I have a 120mm fan above it as well. Ty for all your work!

@bertro514 - ooh, free electricity !!  mine's not free, but affordable for this. At first, i was using the kill-o-watt meter, but then I actually bought some smart plugs with energy monitoring in the app ! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08Q6QFV1M . They've unfortunately gone up in price since I bought them. It's costing me $0.30 to $0.35 per day to run my computer 24/7 mining which I always did anyhow. So I'm guessing about 75% ? is due to mining. So as long as I earn $10 a month, I'm ahead !!

Unfortunately B*i*t*coin has gone down, but I'm holding out on cashing out until it goes up The first time I cashed out (5/11), it was high - after minimal fees I cashed out with USD $54.80 ...  B*i*t*coin is currently at 63.5% of what it was then ... even if I cash out now, I would net $92 !! If it ever goes back up to where it was, it would be $122 !! This is after 5 full weeks. So yes, it is still profitable !

Now relating to the wear and tear on the card, as I mentioned before, my 2070 Super is way overkill for what I actually have non-mining use for it. Unlike you & others, I did not buy my pewter for gaming. So I'm not really concerned - even after watching the GN video of the Dell GTX 1660 Super ... As you can see, the software does an amazing job of optimizing the card ...

And I keep an eye on the temps all the time. If I see anything change, I'll stop mining and take a look closer at the card - open it up if necessary and re-paste it and see how that helps.

And I wish I had that 3070 instead (or also) !!! Keep in mind these numbers are calculated with the current low B*i*t*coin price.

@SteveK318 lol, I think I'm gonna keep the little critters around for a few more years hahaha. So that leaves me with looking to find a place for the Dell on my tiny desk. The 34" monitor and my flight sim gear take up all the space tho. I'll have to get creative because it's clear that at floor level it's a dust magnet. I bet the 2-3 degrees decrease in temps also has to do with the filter being clean, so better airflow.

Thanks for the info and pics of your m*ining. Not bad profits there. Which software?

@SteveK318  Yea it didnt take long to print. Hardest part was getting the far side of bracket to hold the nut to screw in the m3 as i did it kind of backwards.

@bertro514 - haha, I guess you're right about keeping the critters around a little longer !!

Yikes, 34" monitor and sim gear !!  haha - I'm still using my old 23" HP W2371d , so plenty of room on my desk !! There must be a way to at least get it off the floor , maybe a hanging or wall mounted shelf ? or at least a stand to get it off the floor.

Yeah, I'm pretty pleased with the profits !!  The software is called quikminer by nicehash - https://www.nicehash.com/quickminer There are tons of videos and info available out there about it. You will find many good and some bad comments out there about it, but as with everything you need to decide for yourself. For me, it is perfect and works flawlessly. If you want to continue with a private conversation anytime, I'd be more than happy to share what I have learned.

I’ve been swamped at work. I still haven’t installed my fans/cpu cooler.  I’m really curious if this new mount will cool the 3070

For anyone wondering, the Scythe Fuma 2 cooler **will** fit in the XPS 8940, with a slight caveat:

Although the cooler does fit, the cover is fairly difficult to slide back on and actually presses against the tops of the heat pipes of the Fuma 2 when fully slid into place. Everything is running great and temps are awesome, so right now I don't see this negatively affecting anything.

It is almost a drop-in replacement, the only requirement being you will need (4) M3x16 screws to attach the mounting brackets because the supplied screws are too wide for the holes in the 8940 motherboard. It is not necessary to use the supplied backplate - just attach the brackets to the motherboard using the supplied black spacers and the M3 screws and you're good good to go.

For fun, I've tried the Noctua NH-D9L, the Vetroo V5 and now the Scythe Fuma 2 in this system and the Fuma 2 is giving the best performance of the 3 - slightly edging out the NH-D9L.

If anyone is interested, I can supply more install details and pics if you want.

Cheers

@bertro514  @SteveK318  Can i know do u all remove the side panel to improve the temperature of the PC when using? or just close it all the time to make sure the airflow inside the casing?

Another question would be during the usage of PC, whats the ambient temperature?

@Kelvin Lee I keep the side panel closed to have predictable airflow.

@studmonkey77  Hey, that's great!  Did you use the variant of the single fan frame I uploaded to Thingiverse specifically for M3 screws?
