Bug: New XPS 13 9300 slow boot caused by intel INF errors

Hi,

I want to submit an issue to Dell that I believe is a driver/chipset INF issue that affects the 9300 lineup. I spoke with Intel on these issues and they confirmed that it will have to be dealt with by Dell.

The new XPS 13 (9300) takes about 50-60 seconds to boot Windows (while the dots are spinning). This issue persists even after reformatting/installing a fresh copy of Win10, installing/uninstalling all drivers, turning fastboot on/off, updating Bios to 1.0.7, etc.

It's likely the error is caused by thousands of driver errors, which is seen in the bootlog as:

BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED @cpu.inf,%intelppm.devicedesc%;Intel Processor

The bootlog is 2,940 lines long, mostly comprised of these messages. Every other Dell laptop (XPS lineup, but not this year's model) that I've checked has a bootlog that is only a couple of hundred lines long.

How can this be submitted to Dell for them to look at? It's likely a driver issue. I contacted support and the representative was absolutely useless at understanding what I was trying to ask...

Can submit the full bootlog if needed.

Thank you!

Lenovo Yoga 730 (8th Gen i7-8565U / 16GB ram )
- Fairly slow/old compared to the Dell XPS 9300

I just did a full clean install and drivers install.
Switched OFF Fast Startup and it's boot times with it switched off from cold start:
7.24 seconds to the splash screen with user name
11.66 seconds to a ready state

================================

Exactly what I'm seeing with an older Inspiron-5570 15-inch laptop.
- Circa 2017 but it does have a NVMe SSD

Clean-Installed Windows-10 Home 64bit v2004 .
- Installed Windows-Updates. Device-Manager is complete and free of errors.

Switched OFF Fast Startup

9 seconds to the splash screen with user name
12 seconds to a ready state (usable Windows-10 desktop).

This is a great disgrace for Dell and the DELL flagship.

ah that is a shame.  Mine pushed that bios via windows update so I know that does not fix it.

In my case, RIP 9300 - it's gone back.  Between this and the thermals, I could not keep it any longer where it was not possible to send it back

I have literally just ordered a 9500 so I will update you on how that goes.  I have a horrible feeling it too will have the same issue in regards to boot performance.  ONE comment has been made about it but nothing else.  It is possible the trackpad issue which has gone viral may be hiding it but time will tell on Friday when I rec it.

Went for the top spec 10750H, 32GB ram, 1TB drive with the 4k screen.

Hi All, Quick update on a case. I have been getting messages for last week or so that Level3 team is working on it. Today I got a link to "new" BIOS, got soooo exited Of course tried to install it and instantly noticed that it is the same 1.0.11 version. However if you look on the web site in drivers section it looks like it was updated yesterday. Anyway, I installed it even if it had the same number hopping for a fix but unfortunately it is still the same. So case still open. Will update once I get some news.

Hi @Anthony81 I just wanted to let you know that I'm experiencing the same and I've been following this thread silently but closely!

I'm sure there are plenty of people following this so please let us know how you get on! I've raised this to Dell to no avail so you're leading the charge it seems.

I can't find any new bios posted on the website... was this something the support team sent to you? Argh, I'm still waiting for Dell to fix the issue of display adapters not working!! (i think this was broken in 1.0.9 or 1.0.10...)

I received this message from Tech Support:

"We have a BIOS update coming out in end of July for a similar issue. It doesn't address Fast boot issue specifically in these notes but it does address a 60 seconds delay after restarts. So I think this new BIOS will resolve your issue. If it's not posted by July 31 tell me in message here. 1.1.0 should be the new version."

It doesn't sound like it directly addresses the issue....but let's see...

Just to let you know I got my 9500 today and this does not have the same issue as the 9300.

On battery power with fast startup disabled, it took 10 seconds to get to a ready state.
On Power: exactly the same time

With Fast startup enabled, its strangely more at 12-13 seconds.

All tests were carried out 3 times

Just a shame it still has to go back because of QC issues - namely the oh so popular wobbly trackpad that they supposedly fixed in June.

I have the same issue.  Just received my XPS 9300 today and it takes 60-120 seconds to bootup.  I just keep seeing the Dell logo and the spinning dots.

Has anyone seen a solution to this problem?

Hi @RSB1_Boston

alexcele found a solution for improving the boot time with fastboot enabled. See this post: https://www.dell.com/community/forums/forumtopicprintpage/board-id/XPS/message-id/62998/print-single-message/true/page/1

As for the typical cold boot/restart times, those are still slow. There will apparently be a bios update at the end of this month, and we will have to see if that improves anything.

I've been told a BIOS update coming end of July may fix the issue. We'll have to wait and see

Hi All,

In my case they asked me to find another 2h to talk to Level 3 engineer this week. I hope to have some time on Tuesday.

As already mentioned, this issue is not Windows related and formatting drives and reinstalling is just a waste of time.

What Level 3 engineer wants me to do now is to boot Linux from an external USB - I have already told them that I did this and delay was the same like with Windows boot but they want me to do it again.

Will send an update once I talk to them after Tuesday.

Today's update. Had a quick call with Dell's engineer. They asked me to install different version of Intel management engine components. That of course made no difference since issue is in a BIOS and has nothing to do with an operating system. Will keep you posted.

@Anthony81 have you tried turning it off and on again?
