Dell XPS 13 9310, Display issue after installing update!

Hello,

My Dell XPS 13 9310 with the 11th generation i7 processor, Intel(R) Iris Xe Graphics, and preinstalled Ubuntu 20.04 (Kenel 5.6.0.1022-oem) just arrived yesterday. After installing the suggested updates, I restarted the laptop and it has been restarted with flickering/tearing (horizontal lines) and I cannot see and do anything. Then it goes into GNU GRUB options.
I restored the system into the original configuration and have updated firmware to the last version (Ver. 1.1.1) and after installing the updates, it has still the same issue.

I have tried Ubuntu 18.04 and after installing updates the same issue came back again!

Thanks in advance for your comments!

Hey @Alb0, where are you from? Your Dell representatives seems to be generous. I also have an open ticket with them and I only receive . Try this, try that, like I'm a technician working for Dell and get paid to spend time troubleshooting their issues...crazy...

Hi @Alb0 ,

Yes, I already told Dell Support that a fresh Windows install will not solve the problem. Once you update the system to the latest version (both Win and drivers) you will end up with the same problems ... this was reported by many users already.

Please report back how it goes with your new system. If new hardware solves the issue than at least we know something.

I also had to spend some time trying different things like updating drivers or doing fresh windows installation. In addition to the colour noise screen, i'm also getting issues with some apps - it looks like it is not updating the app view on the screen and it just freezes not reflecting changes. Similar issue described here link. I was able to find a workaround for the second issue - disabling HWA in windows registry seems helps, but it does not resolve the issues with the screen going black/colour noise and then back to normal. So, I'm not sure if getting a new device will resolve both bugs for me.

Thanks.  I've had the computer for four days and it's pretty annoying.  Your changes make sense, and i'll report back if they don't work. (This is in response to Black Russian's proposed solution above.)

I am having this exact issue which occurs two or three times a day.  My system was delivered on October 27, 2020 and has Windows 10 Pro.

Hey everyone, quick update on my end. The steps I posted before (see this thread on page 3) did not fix the issue for the blank/black screen. It's happened to me again few minutes ago. Screen went black for a few seconds and eventually came back to normal. I do not experience artefacts anymore, and the colors, saturation, gamma and the likes are not out of whacked as before. My screen is not flickering either, it never did actually.

Hi @Robybadoula, I have the same feeling about my replacement that it won't resolve the issue. I also have opened a support ticket with Intel support (thinking it could be a driver bug) and waiting what they say. For now they just asked for system diagnostic logs. I'll post an update if Intel gives any ideas on how to resolve this.

Hello everyone, I also have this problem with my XPS received in early December. After reinstalling my PC and setting up the parameters offered by @YassineS, I no longer had any artifacts but still this black screen which appeared for a few seconds. Personally, I have this black screen when I use Google Chrome. After tests, I disable hardware acceleration (Settings/Advanced setting /uncheck "Use hardware acceleration if available") and for two days, no black screen. Hope this holds up and this tip can help people.

Same exact issue as @CerfTitan293 (bien le bonjour). Trying your fix. I'll tell you if that helps.

I have also implemented the fix suggested by the dell support team. I have disable all items on stratup (programs and services others than windows) but that didn't help.

Cheers,

Yassine

I deactivated the hardware acceleration today, I will swing by should the problem (black screen) persists.

HI @LopezM ,

I didn't try with 48Hz yet.

So, to summarize, you did the following:

1. turn off HDR

2. Turn off panel self refresh rate

3. turn off Chrome HW acceleration?

4. Changed refresh rate to 48Hz

By the way, are you guys having 4K or FHD displays? I mean, is this issue affecting 4k as well?

Yes, I have 4K display. Did all the steps, including turning off the various screen power settings mentioned by the Black Russian--the one step I haven't done is turn off hardware acceleration in any browser, but that has been recommended.  (I also uninstalled all Dell software and installed only the latest Dell Command Update, think it's 4.0, from their website.)

Hello Guys,

Sadly I have to report that disabling hw acceleration  in Chrome didn't help for me. I still get the black screens like before.

@AttilaZ, Besides the steps in the Black Russian's post (including turning off HDR and panel self-refresh), did you also lower the refresh rate to 48Hz?  I haven't had a black screen in a number of days now (after doing all those steps and updating all drivers).
