How to boot from 2nd SSD

XPS 17 9700

XPS 17 9700

Hi

I have the Dell XPS 9700 which is 3 years old. It came with 16gb RAM and 500Gb ssd.

I have purchased 64Gb Crucial RAM and 1Tb WD SN770 NVMe SSD. Also purchased thermal paste and thermal pads.

But when I was trying to open the fans, battery and heat sink; multiple screws head got blunt and I was not able to remove them. So I couldn't use the thermal paste and pads.

Was able to successfully change the RAMs. But the heat sink on the SSD slot 1 (with the old SSD) could not be removed because the screws got blunt. Also I was able to remove only one screw on the empty SSD slot. So I have put my new 1Tb SSD on the 2nd slot.

Now question is :

1) How do I clone the data from Slot 1 (500Gb-old) to Slot 2 (1tb-new) (Any video will be appreciated)

2) How do I make the new Slot 2 (1tb-new) as the primary SSD to boot from

3) How do I completely delete data from slot 1 (500gb-old), so that there is no data left behind and I can use this old SSD for data storage only

Thanks

Use a drive cloning software like Macrium Reflect, Clonezilla, etc. to copy the content from drive 0 to drive 1

Change the boot order in the BIOS to boot first from Drive 1

Once you have booted to the new drive, then you can reformat the olde drive in Windows.

1.  You can install Macrium Reflect (free trial) to old SSD and cloning by drag and drop all partitions to new SSD.  Don't forget to expand (fill space) the OS partition to get full capacity of new SSD.  Instructions can be viewed here  https://www.macrium.com/blog/cloning-a-disk-with-macrium-reflect-v8

2.  After the cloning is complete, upon reboot, continuously tapping on F12 for one time boot menu.  There, you will highlight to select to boot with new SSD.

3.  After your laptop boot into Windows with new SSD, you can use command line to run diskpart then select disk, and clean the old SSD.  Then go into Disk Management to initialize the old SSD and run the wizard to format and create storage drive.  If you are not familiar, search for instructions how to use diskpart, example here  https://www.seagate.com/support/kb/how-to-diskpart-eraseclean-a-drive-through-the-command-prompt-005929en/
