The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined + Unable to run BiOS diagnostic + Unable to boot Windows
Hello everyone, here is my problem:
I own a Dell XPS 15 7590 for 4 years with a dual boot: Ubuntu 20 and Windows 11. I use it mostly on Ubuntu, I haven’t boot on windows for a long time
Recently, my laptop started with the classical :
The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined.
Ubuntu starts normally, but indicates the battery at zero, charging (but does not charge of course ). If I unplug the charger, the computer turns off instantly.
So I changed the battery and charger, without success.
However, I have the impression that the problem is a little more serious than that.
Here are the different symptoms I observed:
- I can no longer boot windows (I select windows in grub, the dell logo appears with the wheel, then reboot)
- I cannot view any battery info in BiOS or run diagnostics from BiOS as well. As soon as I try one of these operations, the laptopcrash and reboot.
Sounds a lot like a motherboard problem, doesn’t it? My next attempt is to update the BiOS, but with this shaky charger I am not serene. Also, since my battery is at 0%, I may not be able to update it (blocked by the 10% rule). I have to use a USB drive because Windows is no longer available. That’s why I prefer to ask here before.
Your help is welcome,
Sincerely,
Tristan

If you changed the battery and adapter (you did use genuine Dell OEM parts correct?), then that leaves either the DC jack on the laptop or a MB problem. I would replace the DC jack first. That power jack can be found at Parts-People here.

@JOcean Thanks for your answer. But I do not see the link between changing the jack and crashes when launching windows or diagnosis from the bios...
Sorry for the questions, but I just want to avoid extra costs :)

The problem could also be with the replacement battery -- if it's not recognized by the system, and the AC adapter is not recognized, you will have issues.
As noted, the DC jack should be replaced with an OEM part.
If the battery is third-party, it could be part of the issue. Does the system attempt to charge using a USB-C charger and a Thunderbolt port?

@Tristan16D I was primarily replying to your adapter not recognized statement not any crashing problem.

Ok so after some tests, the laptop seems able to charge with a USB-C power supply.
According to you, what is the best solution :
- Buy a new AC jack ?
- Buy a powerfull USB-C power supply ? If yes, the which one ? I can't find a DELL model with a guaranted compat with XPS 15 7590.

You need a new DC jack -- the Thunderbolt port alone won't provide full power to the system.
